Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: The House with a Clock in its Walls
December 17th, 2018
The House with a Clock in its Walls is one of two fantasy family films starring Jack Black that came out this fall. I got solicitations for screeners for both films, but I passed on Goosebumps 2 and choose to review this film instead. Did I make the right call?

2017 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part II - TV-on-DVD Releases
December 9th, 2017
The first installment of our Holiday Gift Guide dealt with first run wide releases and one franchise box set. It wasn’t a particularly good year for high quality monster hits. Sadly, TV on DVD releases look even worse. That’s not to say there were no good TV shows that debuted last year; however, there haven’t been many TV shows that made their DVD / Blu-ray debuts recently. My favorite “new” TV show of the year was MST3K (Netflix says it’s a new show, but the creators say it is season 11 of the original MST3K, so I don’t know if I should really call it a new show), but there’s no DVD / Blu-ray release, at least not for people who didn’t back the Kickstarter. My favorite truly new show was GLOW, but again, there’s no DVD / Blu-ray release yet. Likewise, Stranger Things has no regular Blu-ray release. You know what, just assume anything from Netflix isn’t on this list, because there’s no DVD / Blu-ray, or the release is nearly featureless (as is the case with Jessica Jones). On a side note, my favorite new non-screening show was Speechless, which again has no DVD / Blu-ray release, so it’s not just Netflix that’s ignoring physical media. There are also not a lot of megasets to compensate, meaning this list might be a bit short compared to most years. I’ve even had to break my usual rule when it comes to megasets.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Twin Peaks
September 18th, 2016
Twin Peaks came out more than 25 years ago and it was instantly a smash hit on TV an a cultural phenomenon. A year later it was gone. There was an attempt at a prequel movie, but the less said about that film’s box office numbers, the better. Despite its short and bumpy run, the show’s never really faded out of the minds of its fans and a box set makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time such a box set has been released. I previously reviewed the Definitive Gold Edition when it came out on DVD in 2007, while a Blu-ray edition, The Entire Mystery came out in 2014. Is this one worth upgrading to if you own the previous one? Is it at least worth buying if you missed the previous one?

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Inside Out
November 2nd, 2015
Inside Out was one of the monster hits of the summer earning more than $350 million domestically and $800 million worldwide. This makes it the third biggest hit in Pixar's history. Is it also one of their best? Or was it swept up in the "irrational exuberance" we saw at the box office this summer?
