Holiday theater counts: three wide releases debut today, but Spider-Man remains widest
December 22nd, 2021
As the Christmas holiday approaches, there are plenty of options for movie-goers. The only question is what to watch? Spider-Man: No Way Home opened last Friday and took nearly everyone by surprise as it posted an opening domestic weekend of $260 million, placing itself between 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War as the second-biggest opening of all time. The film is currently showing in 4,336 locations, which makes it the 30th-widest opening of all time, just behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Spider-Man: No Way Home might not be challenged at the box office, but there are still a wide array of films for every interest.

Theater counts: Spider-Man swings into a stellar 4,336 theaters
December 16th, 2021
Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters in a big way this weekend, landing in a stellar 4,336 locations. That count places it as the second-widest release of the year, behind No Time to Die’s 4,407 and in front of Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s 4,315. This latest Spider-Man feature again pairs director Jon Watts and Tom Holland (as Spider-Man) from 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home; a film that went on to score over $1 billion worldwide. Spider-Man: No Way Home carries a $200m budget, eclipsing its predecessor by $40m. Also making its theatrical debut this week is Nightmare Alley. The neo-noir psychological thriller directed by Guillermo del Toro is set to release in 2,145 locations. The film, which is based on the 1946 novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham contains a bevy of top Hollywood actors.

Limited and Virtual Releases: The Box Office Won’t Die this Weekend
July 30th, 2020
No less than 15 films are debuting in theaters around the country this weekend, which makes this the biggest weekend for new releases since March 13. Eight of the new films are earning decent pre-release buzz, and all but one of those are earning good reviews. I think She Dies Tomorrow has the best shot at earning some measure of box office success, but as a Canadian, it is my patriotic duty to support Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind.

Alice is a reclusive writer, resigned to a solitary life on the seaside cliffs of Southern England while World War II rages across the channel. When she opens her front door one day to find she’s to adopt a young London evacuee named Frank, she’s resistant. It’s not long, however, before the two realize they have more in common in their pasts than Alice had assumed.

Limited and VOD Releases: Run to the Theaters
August 23rd, 2019
There are several releases on this week’s list earning amazing reviews, including Brittany Runs a Marathon, which has the best shot at attracting a mainstream audience. On the other hand, Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles and Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool could do well on the art house scene.

Limited and VOD Releases: Serving a Fresh Dish of Revenge
May 11th, 2018
It is a busier week than average with quite a few limited releases that are earning great reviews, some of which are also earning loud buzz. Revenge is one such film and it is playing on Video on Demand, so you don’t have to go to a theater to see it.

Home Market Releases for July 11th, 2017
July 11th, 2017
This week, the home market is led by The Fate of the Furious, which is the number one film both in terms of worldwide box office and alphabetically. It earned well over $1 billion worldwide, but it is losing the charm the franchise thrived on during the past few installments. As for the Pick of the Week, I’m going with Underground, Season Two, or the Two-Season box set.

Limited and VOD Releases: Sign Your Name. Here
April 7th, 2017
It is a busy week for limited releases with more than a dozen titles on this week’s list. This includes a quartet of releases with good reviews and loud buzz. Gifted’s reviews are good, but likely not good enough for limited release. That said, it has a shot at becoming a sleeper hit. Their Finest is a stellar British World War II dramedy, but the cast is more famous in the U.K. than here. Your Name is arguably the best film on this week’s list and it is a monster hit worldwide. However, it is playing in over 300 theaters and that might turn out to be too many. This leaves Colossal as the film with the best shot at mainstream success. Its reviews are not the best, but the combination of reviews, cast, buzz, and commercial viability is.

Limited Releases: Limited Releases are Barely Here
May 29th, 2015
There are not a lot of films on this week's list; however, there are several that are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Heaven Knows What and I Believe in Unicorns are both coming of age films. Tu dors Nicole and Wet Bum are both Canadian films, the latter of which is only playing in Canada at the moment. Finally, there's Results. Its reviews are not as good as the other four, but its chances of earning some measure of mainstream success is likely greater.

2013 Preview: October
October 1st, 2013
October is an awkward month. It sits between the dumping ground that is September and November, the unofficial start of Awards Season / holiday blockbuster season. For the most part, September was stronger than average for the month and there's reason to be optimistic going forward. After all, box office success tends to feed on itself, as does box office struggles. That said, there are not a lot of sure hits over the coming four weeks. Of the nine or ten films opening wide this month, only Gravity has a better than 50/50 chance at $100 million. Captain Phillips could have a shot at the century mark, but only if it becomes a serious Awards Season player. Its early reviews suggest that could be a possibility. Last October, there were two films to reach the $100 million mark, Taken 2 and Argo. On the other hand, pretty much everything else that opened that month crashed and burned. While this October doesn't have as strong a top end, it will hopefully have much better depth.

Limited Releases: Looking for Redemption
June 28th, 2013
There are nine films on this week's list, with quite a few having strong reviews or impressive casts. Unfortunately, only one of them, I'm So Excited, has both. It is a return to light comedy by Pedro Almodovar and that could help it become the biggest limited release hit of the week. However, it is a foreign language film, which will limit its potential to expand significantly.

Limited Release: Ready to Attack
June 21st, 2013
There is a relatively short list of limited releases this week, but there are a few that are worth keeping an eye on. A Hijacking and The Attack. Both films are earning stunning reviews, but both are foreign language films, so that will hurt their chances to expand significantly, but maybe they will have strong starts in limited release.

Featured 3D Blu-ray / DVD Review: Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
June 10th, 2013
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters was a high concept action film that came out in January. That suggests it was a good idea on paper, but the execution was weak. On the other hand, it did become a surprise hit earning more than $200 million worldwide. Did the studio underestimate what they had? Or did the film thrive merely by being better than the January competition?

2013 Preview: January
January 1st, 2013
December ended on a positive note with 2012 topping 2011 with a week to spare. Hopefully this will translate into strong box office numbers going forward. There are several January releases that actually look very interesting, but you always have to ask, if the films are as good as they look, why are they opening in January? The biggest hit on this list will likely not be a January release, but a limited release from December that is expanding wide in January. Zero Dark Thirty opened in limited release the Wednesday before Christmas and right away it got off to an incredible start. If it can turn some of its Awards Season nominations into wins, which seems very likely at this point, it should be the biggest hit of January. If it can earn some major Oscars, then it might crack $100 million. Unfortunately, no other film on this release list is likely to come close to the $100 million mark. Last January was unseasonably strong with three films opening with $20 million or more and four films finishing with $50 million or more. It is possible that none of the new releases will reach those relatively weak standards.
