VOD Releases: In Need of Assistance
April 24th, 2020
After a chaotic couple of weeks, the Video on Demand market has really slowed down. The Photograph is the only wide release to be featured here, but it is not among the best VOD releases. The only two I’m really interested in seeing are The Assistant and To the Stars.

Limited and VOD Releases: Getting Short Changed
January 31st, 2020
The 2020 Oscar Shorts lead the way on the limited release report this week; however, it is far from the only release worth checking out. The Assistant, Beanpole, The Wonderland, and others are all intriguing. I don’t think any of them will find an audience, but I think most people who do get a chance to see them will be impressed.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Grandma
February 7th, 2016
Grandma was Lily Tomlin's first starring role in nearly 30 years. She clearly wasn't rusty and there was even some Oscar-buzz for her performance. That didn't pan out. Is it as good as its reviews? Or was nostalgia at play here? Were critics just so happy Lily Tomlin was back that their judgment was clouded?

Limited and VOD Releases: Autumn Years and Oscar Glory
August 21st, 2015
It might not be a good week for limited releases overall, but we do have a potential Oscar nominee opening this week. Grandma is not only earning the best reviews of the week, but Lily Tomlin is earning some early Awards Season buzz.

Limited Releases Are What They Are
September 27th, 2013
There are a lot of limited releases on this week's list, including a few earning stellar reviews. There are also a few with weak reviews or that are the wrong genre to thrive in limited release. One film fits into both ends of the spectrum, We Are What We Are, which is earning great reviews, but as a horror film, likely won't find an audience till the home market. Hopefully I am wrong. Inequality for All is earning even better reviews, but it is a documentary, so it have very little chance to expand. On the Job has the best reviews of the week, but it is a foreign-language action film, so it will likely not earn breakout success.

Limited Releases: Death of Limited Releases
March 8th, 2013
Last week, the film with the most buzz was Stoker, but it only had good not great reviews. It still started very well at the box office, thanks in part to the buzz. This week, the film with the most buzz is The ABCs of Death; however, its reviews are really bad. There are some films earning great reviews, like Electrick Children, but none have really loud buzz. Maybe there will be a surprise hit, but it could be a slow week for limited releases. There are also two Canadian films opening this week, Hit 'n Strum and Ferocious. Check the First Weekend Club for more details.
