Theater counts: Those Who Wish Me Dead remains the widest release
May 20th, 2021
The top three films in theaters this week are somewhat of an anomaly in terms of their box office results versus their theater counts. The widest release of the week is Warner Bros.’, Those Who Wish Me Dead, which opened in 3,188 locations, and likely play in something similar this weekend, but took in the least at the box office ($2.83 million). Another newcomer, Spiral, took the top spot at the box office with $8.75 million, but had the lowest theater count of the three at 2,811. It will gain 185 new venues this week. In the middle was Wrath of Man, which pulled in $3.7 million from 3,007 locations and remains in those theaters for a second weekend. Those films will go largely unchallenged this week as the only new wide release is Bleecker Street’s Dream Horse. The film based on a true story and starring Toni Collette and Damian Lewis opens in 1,256 locations...

2018 Preview: June
June 1st, 2018
This May was an odd month, as Avengers: Infinity War opened on the last weekend of April, rather than the first weekend of May. This meant May started out slowly, but Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story did well enough to give 2018 a healthy lead over 2017. Looking forward, there are two potential monster hits this month, Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and another $100 million hit, Ocean’s 8. Last June, there were four $100 million hits, led by Wonder Woman, which pulled in over $400 million. I think 2018 and 2017 will be an even match at the top, so 2018 will have to rely on depth to improve upon its lead over 2017.

Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Please Stand By
May 1st, 2018
When Please Stand By opened in limited release, it missed the Mendoza Line by a large margin. However, it was also a Video on Demand, so its box office numbers were essentially immaterial. Now that it is out on DVD or Blu-ray is it worth picking up? Or is it strictly a rental?

Limited and VOD Releases: Limited Releases Have Gone to the Dogs
March 23rd, 2018
There are over two dozen limited releases coming out this week, but many of them had only a handful of, if any, reviews. There are some that should find a receptive audience, whether its on Video on Demand like Pyewacket, or whether it has massive breakout success, like most think Isle of Dogs will manage.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Krampus
April 25th, 2016
Krampus, the mythological being, is suddenly one of the hottest movie monsters around. While searching for the the Amazon link to this movie, I found six movies that either had Krampus in the name, or Krampus was on the cover of the DVD / Blu-ray. However, of these, only Krampus earned a wide box office release and it became a low-budget hit earning more during its opening weekend than it cost to make. Did it deserve this success? Will it thrive on the home market, even though it is a long way from Christmas?

2015 Preview: December
December 1st, 2015
November ended on a positive note with a strong Thanksgiving weekend. Even so, the overall numbers were mixed with a lot of misses mixed in with a few hits. It was better than October and we will call that a victory. Meanwhile, December is potentially record-breaking. Actually, given the evidence, it is almost assuredly going to be record-breaking. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already set a record for the most money taken from ticket pre-sales and the biggest December weekend will fall. The pre-orders alone will guarantee that. On the downside, it is very likely that no film will make as much in total as The Force Awakens will make during its opening weekend. There's a chance no film makes in total as much as The Force Awakens makes during its opening day. There are a few films that have a shot at $100 million. For example, Joy should get there, if it becomes a major player during Awards Season. If not, it will at least come close. Daddy's Home, and to a lesser extent Sisters, could be surprise $100 million hits. However, like the rest of 2015, December is shaping up to be a month of a record-breaking hit and a lot of films that struggle just to get noticed. On the other hand, last December, was a lot more balanced at the top with four films earning more than $100 million, led by The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. There's a chance The Force Awakens earns more than all four $100 million hits from last year earned combined.

Limited and VOD Releases: Shining a Spotlight on Limited Releases
November 6th, 2015
It is a short list this week, due to technical considerations. However, there are seven films here that are earning good reviews and some measure of pre-release buzz. The film with the best shot at mainstream success is Brooklyn (Reviews). It isn't the only film that could succeed, as Spotlight, Trumbo, and the rest could also find receptive audiences during Awards Season.

Featured 3D Blu-ray / DVD Review: The Boxtrolls
January 18th, 2015
The Boxtrolls was a September release that earned good reviews, especially for a September release. However, it failed to meet expectations at the box office. On the other hand, it has done very well with Awards Season voters. Is it as bad as its box office would indicate? Is it as good as its Oscar nomination would indicate? Or is it somewhere in-between?

Limited Releases are the Best
May 30th, 2014
It's a mixed bag for limited releases with a number of movies earning weak reviews or that have almost no chance at the box office. There are also some that are good enough to thrive, like Elena - Reviews or Lucky Them - Reviews. But the best movie according to critics is We are the Best! - Reviews.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: The Way Way Back
November 15th, 2013
The Way Way Back is written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. For most of their careers, they have been actors. However, they wrote the script for The Descendants, which won them an Oscar. This time around, they not only co-wrote the screenplay, but co-directed the film as well. Was The Descendants a fluke? Or do they have another critical darling on their hands?
