Theater counts: Mufasa holds on as widest release for another weekend
January 23rd, 2025
-3-News.jpg)
Last weekend’s box office race was tight as expected, with just over $1.1 million separating the top film from the third place finisher. Despite two new entries making their chart debuts, Mufasa: The Lion King once again found itself at the top of the heap, biting off over $12 million in its fifth weekend on the big screen and crossing the $200 million mark domestically. The film also passed the $600 million worldwide threshold on Wednesday, currently enjoying $600.99 million in global receipts. As another batch of wide releases make their way into theaters, Mufasa will once again take the crown as the widest release in the land.

After three weeks of dominating the box office, Venom: The Last Dance will take a backseat as this weekend's newcomer takes center stage. While the third installment has yet to be as successful as its predecessors, it has nevertheless added over $400 million globally to the Venom franchise, propelling it to $1.76 billion across three films, with $406.44 million coming from the latest feature.

The Venom franchise now holds a global cume of $1.68 billion, with a $323 million contribution from this latest installment. This week sees the debut of five new wide releases, all poised to take on the current box office champ.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Elementary: Season Seven
September 23rd, 2019
Elementary started out in the top 20 in the ratings, but it wasn’t able to stay there more than a couple of seasons. By season six, it was moved to the summer and even the showwriter thought that season would be the last and it was written to be the finale. Then the show got a seventh season. Was this one season too many? Does the show end on a low note?

Home Market Releases for August 29th, 2017
August 29th, 2017
It’s one of those weeks that are deceptively busy. The biggest new release of the week is Wonder Woman, but it is only coming out on Video on Demand. The biggest overall release is the The Lion King franchise on separate Blu-ray releases, but it’s at least a double-dip on Blu-ray. I think a triple-dip on Blu-ray. If it weren’t for these circumstances, they would be clear Pick of the Week contenders. Without those two movies, the next best is... My Cousin Rachel on Blu-ray. Its reviews are not quite Pick of the Week level, but it is the best of what we've got.

Home Market Releases for August 23rd, 2016
August 24th, 2016
There are not many major hits on this week’s list, but there are several releases that are contenders for Pick of the Week. This includes TV on DVD releases like Ash vs The Evil Dead: Season 1 (DVD or Blu-ray), as well as limited releases like Maggie’s Plan (DVD or Blu-ray). However, in the end I went with The Nice Guys on Blu-ray Combo Pack.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Elementary: Season Two
August 25th, 2014
I previously reviewed this show, which should make this review of Elementary much easier. There's no real need to get into the setup of the show, while I only really need to say if the show is better or worse than the first season.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Elementary: Season One
August 25th, 2013
By my calculation, roughly 412% of all TV shows on the air right now are police procedurals. Granted, there might be a flaw in my math, but you get the point. Police procedurals are arguably the most crowded genre in the history of TV and certainly the most crowded genre at the moment. Elementary is trying to carve a path in that field. Does the show try to do anything to make it stand out? And if so, is it enough? If not, can it still thrive while still feeling a bit borrowed?

2012 Preview: November
November 1st, 2012

October was pretty good with a few films really crushing expectations, which made up for the few duds that opened at the end. 2012 gained about $100 million over 2011 during the month of October. We really needed this success and hopefully November will continue this push forward. However, November is a bit of a weird month. There are five weekends, but only eight true wide releases, half of which open on the Thanksgiving long weekend, leaving the other four weeks with just one true wide release each. There are a couple others opening in the semi-wide level and another opening in limited release with a planned wide release, but even so, it is not a busy month. That said, it is a case of quality over quantity. There are four films that are pretty much guaranteed to reach $100 million, one of which should reach $300 million. By comparison, last November only produced one $100 million film. Granted, that film was The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1, which made nearly $300 million, which is a huge number no matter how you look at it. But this year, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 should top that number and with the other $100 million movies pulling in more than $400 million combined, it should be a very profitable month at the box office.
