New on Disc: Riding the TV-on-DVD Wave

TV on DVD is dominating the home market this week and it is even more dominant next week. Unfortunately, while there are a lot of TV releases this week, we don’t have many that are prime releases. Fans of Doctor Who will want the latest Tom Baker Blu-ray set. His Dark Materials is working better as a TV series than it did as a movie. The two biggest theatrical releases of the week were both animated. Ride Your Wave is the better film, but Promare has the better extras. Both are contenders for Pick of the Week and in the end Ride Your Wave wins the title.

We’ve hit the summer doldrums on the home market, but we do have the first major hit of 2019 to talk about. Too bad Glass earned reviews that are so weak. Unfortunately, none of the smaller releases really rise to the level of Pick of the Week. Fans of animation are in luck, as both Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Justice League vs. The Fatal Five are both worth picking up. Bend of the River is a great western. Meanwhile, if you like B-movie cult classics, The Manitou is for you.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Perry Mason Movie Collection: Volume Five

The fifth and final volume of the Perry Mason Movie Collection comes out this week. The original TV show is still widely considered a classic of the genre and was so beloved that nearly two decades after the original show ended, CBS began airing a series of TV movies. Over the next decade, 30 such films were made. Did the high quality last till the end of the franchise? Or did it run out of steam?
