Theater counts: How to Train Your Dragon soars into 4,356 theaters
June 12, 2025
It was another win for Lilo & Stitch at the domestic box office over the weekend, with the film posting over $32 million in its third frame, outpointing newcomer Ballerina by nearly $8 million, and taking its 17-day North American total to $335.66 million. The animated feature will yield to another newcomer this weekend as How to Train Your Dragon makes its way into theaters.
The latest How to Train Your Dragon film is a live-action feature and part of the successful How to Train Your Dragon franchise, one which has garnered over $1.6 billion in global box office from three previous feature films, but also includes a plethora of short films and an announced sequel set for release in 2027. The most recent iteration follows Hiccup, the inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast, who defies centuries of traditional animosity between Vikings and dragons by befriending Toothless, a feared Night Fury. Their bond reveals the true nature of dragons and challenges the very foundations of Viking society. This will be director Dean DeBlois’ fourth How to Train Your Dragon film, after helming the previous three features. The live-action movie will be available in 4,256 theaters, including IMAX locales where available.
Also opening in wide release this weekend is the romantic comedy, Materialists. Starting its run in 2,844 movie houses, the film follows a young, ambitious New York City matchmaker who finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex. The film stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal and is directed by second-time director, Celine Song.
Arriving in 771 venues this weekend is the 1880’s Montana-set western, The Unholy Trinity. The movie stars screen veterans Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson, while casting relative newcomer, Brandon Lessard as a young man who makes a promise to his executed father to exact revenge on those who framed him for a crime he didn't commit.
Rounding out the top five this weekend is the current box office leader, with Lilo & Stitch dropping to second place but still widely available in 3,675 cinemas. After securing $24.5 million in its opening weekend, Ballerina holds steady in its second weekend, remaining in 3,409 locations. Occupying the third-place position of widest releases this weekend is Karate Kid: Legends, playing in 3,008 theaters for its third go-around, and lastly, sinking just below the 3,000 mark for the first time is Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning, showing in 2,942 locations this weekend.
Looking ahead to next weekend, we see the debut of three new wide releases, including the animated feature, Elio, and the post-apocalyptic horror film, 28 Years Later. These newcomers are projected to launch in approximately 3,700 and 3,000 theaters, respectively.
