Mickey 17

After three weekends as the widest release in the land, Captain America: Brave New World will fall into second place as newcomer Mickey 17 makes its way onto North American shores. The film will not make its debut alone, however, as a plethora of films will join Mickey 17 on the domestic launchpad.

Directed by Bong Joon-ho, the dark comedy feature follows a destitute man who signs up to be an “expendable,” who is sent on fatal missions in the name of research. Each time he dies, Mickey is cloned using unethical technology that has been banned from Earth. Mickey is played by Robert Pattinson, who is joined by an ensemble cast including Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Joon-ho is best known for directing the 2019 South Korean hit, Parasite, a film that went xon to collect $254 million in receipts from the worldwide box office and won the Oscar for Best Picture. His latest venture behind the camera will begin its run in 3,807 North American cinemas.

Also making its debut this weekend is the true-life drama, Rule Breakers. Starting out in 2,044 locations, the film from Angel Studios follows a visionary woman who sparks hope and opposition in a nation where educating girls is rebellion. The Afghan set film marks the directorial debut for Bill Guttentag, who has previously written numerous biographical and documentary films in a career spanning back to 1986.

Night of the Zoopocalypse is making its arrival into North American cinemas this weekend. The animated feature follows a ragtag group of animal survivors who team up to find a cure for a virus which has turned their fellow zoo animals into vicious zombie mutants. The film will be available in 1,160 locations in the United States, while showing in 240 Canadian theaters.

Other films entering theaters for the first time this weekend include another biopic, with the release of the women’s professional wrestling feature, Queen of the Ring, as well as the Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista fantasy movie, In the Lost Lands. Theater counts have yet to be reported for these films, but we will update once they arrive.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the current box office leader, Captain America: Brave New World, still widely available in 3,480 locations entering its fourth weekend on the big screen. Last weekend’s newcomer, Last Breath, added 72 locations from its opening weekend, landing in 3,090 venues in its second term at the box office. Occupying fourth spot is the other film beginning its fourth weekend with Paddington in Peru. That film drops 620 locations this week but can still be seen in 3,085 theaters. Lastly, The Monkey chimes in with 2,955 theaters after showing in 3,200+ in its first two weekends.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we once again see a wide variety of films navigating their way into theaters, with the two biggest debuting films looking to be the action-comedy Novocaine, starring Jack Quaid, and the Steven Soderbergh-directed spy thriller Black Bag. Those films are projected to start out in 3,200 and 2,500 theaters, respectively.
