Theater counts: Dog Man once again secures widest release in its second weekend

February 6, 2025

Dog Man

Dog Man opened last weekend to a rather unexpected good fortune as the animated feature pawed its way to a solid $36 million in its theatrical debut while outpacing the other newcomer, Companion, by nearly $27 million over the three-day period. To remain number one this weekend, however, the film will have to fend off not only another pair of newcomers but also compete against Super Bowl LIX.

Making its way into theaters this weekend is Love Hurts. The film stars Ke Huy Quan as a prosperous Milwaukee realtor whose hitman past catches up to him when he finds out his brother Knuckles is attempting to hunt him down. Starting out in 3,055 theaters, the film co-stars Ariana DeBose and Daniel Wu, playing the part of Knuckles. A well-known child star, Quan has experienced a resurgence in recent years, most notably starring in the 2022 breakout hit, Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is the horror movie Heart Eyes. The Valentine’s Day set film follows co-workers who, while working late, find themselves running for their lives from the “Heart Eyes Killer” after a case of mistaken identity. The movie stars Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding and will be available in 3,102 locations.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the aforementioned current box office topper with Dog Man, adding one location for a total of 3,886 theaters. Retaining its opening count from last weekend is Companion, still available in 3,285 movie houses. Lastly, Mufasa: The Lion King falls below 3,000 theaters for the first time, but still widely available to see in 2,945 locations.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see the debut of two new wide releases, including the latest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise with the release of Captain America: Brave New World, which is expected to open in approximately 4,000 cinemas. Finally, making its way into North American theaters is another franchise film, this time in the way of the Paddington franchise, with the release of Paddington in Peru. That film is projected to arrive in approximately 3,700 venues.
