Theater counts: Quantumania repeats as widest release and two newcomers arrive

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

It’s likely no big surprise to see last week’s juggernaut release retain its spot as the widest release this week. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania debuted in 4,345 locations and went on to collect an impressive $106 million in its opening weekend and currently enjoys a six-day domestic total of $131.33 million. The latest Marvel feature retains its opening theater count, once again making it the only film currently playing in over 4,000 movie houses.

There are a couple of new contenders however that look to challenge Ant-Man this week as the Elizabeth Banks-directed Cocaine Bear kicks off its theatrical run in 3,534 cinemas. The movie, which is loosely inspired by true events, follows an American black bear after it ingests a bag of cocaine from a wrecked drug plane and goes on a rampage through a small Georgia town. The film stars Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson and Ray Liotta, in one of the latter’s final films.

Also opening in wide release this week is the faith-based drama, Jesus Revolution. Starting its run in 2,475 locations, the film, which is also based on a true story (although that’s about where its similarity with Cocaine Bear ends), follows three men who open the doors of one’s languishing church to an unexpected revival of radical and newfound love, leading to what TIME magazine dubbed a “Jesus Revolution”. The movie stars Joel Courtney, Jonathan Roumie and Kelsey Grammer.

As usual, there are a plethora of options in the limited release category. Opening in 308 cinemas is the Indian thriller, Selfiee, which Walt Disney is releasing under their Star Studios banner. Also opening in limited locations is the animated comedy-adventure, Mummies. Debuting in 225 movie houses, the film follows three mummies on their journey to present-day London to search for an antique ring belonging to a royal family. Also of note, Emily expands from five locations last week, to 579 venues this week.

Looking ahead to next week we see the arrival of Creed III and Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre. The former, which is expected to land in about 3,750 locations is the latest in the Creed and Rocky franchises and returns Michael B. Jordan as the namesake character, as well as the film’s director. Estimated to arrive in approximately 2,000 theaters, the latter is the latest feature from director Guy Ritchie and stars an abundance of feature stars including Jason Statham, Josh Hartnett and Cary Elwes among others.
