Theater counts: a trio of wide releases debut but Beast makes its way to widest release

After trailing Bullet Train in last week’s list of widest releases and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero at the box office, Beast can claim the prior accolade as it adds 11 locations this week for a theater count of 3,754. The Idris Elba survival thriller has collected $14.54 million in its first six days—$11.57 million coming from its opening weekend.

This week three new wide releases will grace theaters: The Invitation, Breaking, and Three Thousand Years of Longing. The widest of the three is Sony Pictures’ The Invitation. Playing in 3,114 locations, the supernatural horror feature stars Nathalie Emmanuel and Thomas Doherty and is directed by Jessica M. Thompson, making her second directorial feature. The second-largest arrival this week is the fantasy film Three Thousand Years of Longing. Launching in 2,436 locations, the movie also stars Idris Elba, this time as a Djinn who offers a woman (played by Tilda Swinton) three wishes in exchange for his freedom. Lastly, available in 902 cinemas this week, is Breaking. Headlined by John Boyega, the true-life thriller based on the story of Brian Brown-Easley (played by Boyega), as the former Marine Corps veteran resorts to serious threats in order to get his story told.

Rounding out the top five this week is last week’s chart topper and three-peater, Bullet Train in 3,513 locations, DC League of Super-Pets in third place this week with 3,284 locales, and depending on where Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero lands this week, Top Gun: Maverick bringing up the rear with 2,962 movie houses.

Per usual there are many films opening (and coming back) in limited release this week. After six years and $1 billion in worldwide earnings, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story makes its return to the big screen as the film will be available in 255 theaters. Also opening in limited theaters is The Good Boss. The Spanish comedy from Cohen Media Group and starring Javier Bardem will play in 12 locations. Other titles making their theatrical introduction this week are Funny Pages, Alienoid and Adopting Audrey.

Looking ahead to next week we see the release of one new feature film, while two blockbuster favorites make their way back to the big screen. Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul is expected to land in 1,800 locations. Both Jaws and Spider-Man: No Way Home—The More Fun Version are projected to re-enter cinemas in 1,200 and 3,000 locations respectively.
