Theater counts: Thor once again dominates as Nope touches down in 3,785 theaters
July 21, 2022
For the second consecutive week, Thor: Love and Thunder and Minions: The Rise of Gru will be playing in the most theaters this weekend while newcomer Nope comes in strong in third spot on this week’s chart.
Dropping only five locations this week to 4,370, Thor: Love and Thunder has garnered just over $250 million domestically since its debut on July 8, while Minions: The Rise of Gru sits just above that with $276.5 million after starting a week earlier. This week the latter drops below 4,000 theaters, landing in a still respectable 3,815 cinemas and leaving Thor as the only film playing in over 4,000 locations.
As previously mentioned though, Nope is the newest and only wide release to hit theaters this week. Arriving in 3,785 theaters, the science-fiction horror film which is written, produced and directed by Jordan Peele, follows ranch owning siblings (played by Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer) who attempt to capture video confirmation of a UFO with the assistance of a tech salesman and a documentarian (played by Brandon Perea and Michael Wincott respectively). Nope will be available in both traditional large screen as well as IMAX formats. Its getting the widest release for a live action non-franchise film since The Lost City debuted in 4,253 movie houses back in March.
Rounding out the top five this week is Where the Crawdads Sing, keeping its opening count of 3,650 locations from last week, and lastly, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank with an added six theaters from last week, going from 3,475 to 3,481 venues.
Opening in limited release this week are a slew of options in which movie-goers should have no problem finding something good to watch. Showing in 10 theaters, La Abuela “The Grandmother” is a horror film about a young model working in Paris who leaves her job to travel to Madrid to take care of her grandmother, who has just had a stroke. Also opening in limited release this week is the Puerto Rican romantic drama, Art of Love. Starring Esai Morales and Kunjue Li, the film is a mysterious, erotic and haunting love story between a writer/professor at Puerto Rico’s leading University and an inspiring artist from the immigrant Chinese community. Lastly, from Greenwich Entertainment comes My Donkey, My Lover & I. The French comedy stars Laure Calamy and is directed by Caroline Vignal.
Looking ahead to next week we see two films open in wide release in DC League of Super Pets and Vengeance. The films are expected to arrive in about 4,200 and 900 theaters respectively.
Note: The theater count for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is an estimate from Box Office Pro.
