International Box Office: Skywalker Remains Sky High in Last Weekend of 2019

January 1, 2020

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker remained on the top of the international chart with an impressive $94.3 million in 52 markets for totals of $363.0 million internationally and $725.2 million worldwide. It got to $750 million worldwide on Monday. The film has had strong runs in a number of major markets, including the U.K. ($51.4 million); Germany ($44.1 million); France ($34.7 million); Japan ($29.2 million); and Australia ($21.2 million). The film opens in Vietnam this weekend and South Korea next weekend, but that’s the end of its run. It will get to $1 billion worldwide, which is more than enough to ensure a healthy profit, but it is far below initial expectations.

Jumanji: The Next Level was second with $61.34 million on 17,627 screens in 79 markets for totals of $297.30 million internationally and $472.76 million worldwide. The film had an absolutely massive opening in Australia earning $9.63 million on 336 screens during its four-day debut. The film’s biggest opening came in the U.K. last weekend, and that’s in raw dollars and not taking into account the size of the two markets. The film won’t live up to its predecessor domestically, but it is a lot closer internationally. Additionally, it has already earned enough to guarantee a healthy profit during its home market run.

Frozen II remained in third place with $42.2 million in 53 markets for totals of $796.3 million internationally and $1.218 billion worldwide. The film had record breaking openings in both Denmark ($4.9 million) and Norway ($4.3 million), as well as the fourth biggest openings in both Sweden ($5.0 million) and Finland ($2.6 million). This film is about $50 million behind the first film on the worldwide chart and it isn’t quite done its box office run just yet. It has its final three openings this weekend: Brazil, Argentina, and Bolivia.

Ip Man 4 landed in fourth place with $28.85 million over the weekend for a total of $111.89 million. This includes $24.66 million in its native China, lifting the film’s running tally to $82.09 million there.

Sheep Without a Shepherd rounded out the top five with $17.00 million over the weekend for a total of $101.05 million after four weeks of release. Most of this was earned in its native China.
