International Box Office: Terminator Cracks Century Mark in its Worldwide Debut

November 6, 2019

Terminator: Dark Fate

Terminator: Dark Fate cracked the $100 million mark worldwide during its first weekend. $101.9 million to be more precise, giving it an early total of $123.6 million so far. Sadly, this is just $72.9 million internationally in 48 markets and that’s just not enough given the film’s production budget. Its biggest market was China, where it opened in second place with $26.84 million over the weekend for a total opening of $28.58 million. The film debuted in first place in South Korea with $7.19 million on 1,315 theaters over the weekend for a total opening of $9.79 million. Had the movie merely cost $100 million, then I would be a lot more happy with this result, but the movie cost a lot more than that and needs close to $500 million worldwide to break even any time soon. I just don’t see that happening.

Better Days landed in second place with $47.76 million in three markets over the weekend for a total of $170.22 million so far. This includes $44.80 million during its second weekend in China, giving it a two-week total of $167.37 million in its native market.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil slipped to third place with $40.5 million in 56 markets over the weekend for totals of $298.9 million internationally and $383.2 million worldwide. The film has had stronger-than-expected legs and has already topped the original’s totals in China ($46.9 million); Russia ($28.2 million); France ($15.3 million); and South Korea ($9.9 million). If it can maintain its legs, then it will have no trouble getting to $500 million worldwide, which what it needed to earn to break even sometime during its home market run.

Joker fell to fourth place with $38.8 million on 11,021 screens in 79 markets for totals of $637.7 million internationally and $936.9 million worldwide. The film will become the first R-rated film to reach $1 billion worldwide, but it might slip out of the top five before then.

The Addams Family rounded out the top five, probably. It earned $26.4 million over the weekend for a total of $44.5 million so far. This includes a first place, $6.14 million debut on 1,568 screens in Russia, which is better than its debut here. The film has yet to open in South Korea, France, and Australia, as well as many smaller markets, and it if continues to perform well, it will hit $100 million internationally and perhaps earn as much as $250 million worldwide.

Weathering With You might have actually earned fifth place. It reportedly made $26.21 million in 11 markets over the weekend for a total of $161.34 million, including a previous run in its native Japan. Its biggest market was Japan, where it debuted in third place with $22.36 million over the weekend for a total opening of $22.56 million. This is a great start for an animated film in that market.
