Theater Averages: Most New Releases Struggle, but Holdovers Thrive

October 31, 2019

No Safe Spaces

There was only one new release in the $10,000 club, No Safe Spaces, which earned $45,548 in its lone theater. While this is a great start, its reviews suggest it won’t stick around long, as the film is preaching to the choir. Jojo Rabbit expanded from five to 55 theaters, but still managed an impressive average of $18,983. Parasite was next with an average $14,158 in 129 theaters during its third weekend of release. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot expanded to 17 theaters, and earned an average of $12,774. It will likely continue to expand, as a lot of shows on its road tour were sold out weeks in advance.

Only one of the rest of the new limited release even came close to the $10,000 club and that was Synonyms with an average of $8,946 in two theaters. Frankie was well back with an average of $4,859 in four theaters. Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound was close behind with an average of $4,116 in three theaters. Housefull 4 was one of the widest limited releases of the week, playing in more than 300 theaters, and earned an average of $2,872. Jesus is King was playing in even more theaters, but only managed an average of $2,285. Prescience was only playing in three theaters, which earned an average of $1,136. Western Stars was playing in over 500 theaters earning an average of $1,043; however, it did have a midweek debut and it is a special engagement release, so it didn’t have full schedule.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Western Stars earned $1 million, including its special engagements.
  • Jojo Rabbit earned $1 million over the weekend, which unsurprisingly took it past that milestone.
  • The Lighthouse expanded into more than 500 additional theaters, helping it get to $3 million so far. It could expand further, but it will take Awards Season glory to expand truly wide.
  • Parasite raced past the $4 million and it will have no trouble expanding further and reaching more milestones.
  • The Peanut Butter Falcon hit $20 million, which is more than it was expected to earn.
  • Judy topped $20 million before the weekend and could reach $25 million before too long.
