Limited and VOD Releases: Who Will be The Boss of Limited Releases This Week?
October 25, 2019
There are several films on this week’s list earning merely good reviews, which probably isn’t good enough to thrive in limited release. There are exceptions, including Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, which is earning some of the best reviews on this week’s list. However, Western Stars appears to have much louder buzz to go with its reviews.

Secondary VOD Releases:
Phillip Youmans was just 17 years old when he directed this film and its reviews strongly suggest he could have a career doing this. On the other hand, the lack of major star power might hold it back at the box office.
A family drama about a large family who gather for the last vacation their matriarch will take. The cast is amazing, but the reviews are barely in the overall positive level, so it will likely struggle in limited release.
Video on Demand
This horror film is earning reviews that are good, but not good enough for limited release. Furthermore, it is playing on VOD, so its box office chances are even weaker. It could find an audience on VOD, especially with those looking for something new to watch at home on Halloween.
Video on Demand
A war story about war crimes during the Afghanistan War and a soldier caught between doing the right thing and avoiding being the next victim of his sadistic commanding officer. The reviews are mostly positive, but they are not positive enough to thrive in limited release. Fortunately, it is coming out on VOD and the reviews are perfectly fine for a rental.
This documentary about the art of cinematic sound (on a side note, I was going to find another way to phrase that, but why redo the work the movie already did?) is earning 100% positive reviews, and movies about movies tend to do well in the art house cinema. I don’t think this film will be an Oscar contender, but it should do well at the box office, at least compared to most documentaries.
A sci-fi film about a facility rich parents send their disappointing daughters to, to help them become the best versions of themselves they can become. The reviews are barely above the overall positive level, which wouldn’t be bad for a wide release, but is simply not good enough for limited release. It looks interesting enough to be worth a rental, when it hits VOD.
A French film about an Israeli immigrant desperate to assimilate into Paris. The film’s reviews are stellar, but I don’t think it will escape the art house circuit.
Long time readers will recognize the name One Piece, even if they have no interest in Anime. It’s one of the most popular Anime franchises in the West and I suspect the special screenings for this film will be popular.
A concert / documentary featuring Bruce Springsteen performing his latest album. The reviews suggest it has a real shot at finding an audience in limited release.

There are more secondary VOD releases with no reviews than have more than one positive review.
