Weekend Predictions: It is All We Got

It’s going to be a short prediction column, because there’s not much to talk about. It: Chapter Two is the only wide release of the week and there weren’t even any wide releases last weekend to give It any real competition. In fact, two of the likely top five films have already been in theaters for more than a month. last year, The Nun led the way with $53.81 million. It: Chapter Two could double that during its opening weekend.
It: Chapter Two is the follow-up to It, a film that smashed records when it opened in 2017. This film isn’t expected to do as well as its predecessor, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, its reviews are much weaker than first film’s reviews were. Secondly, it’s much longer. It’s over 30 minutes longer, which is going to cut into the number of showings per day. The film still has a better than 50/50 chance of opening with more than $100 million during the weekend, but I think it will be very close. So close that Sunday’s estimates might not quite get there. Look for between $100 million and $101 million.
Angel Has Fallen will be way back with between $5 million and $6 million pushing it past the $50 million mark domestically.
Good Boys should be really close behind with $5 million. The film already has more than $60 million and that’s more than enough to be a financial success.
The Lion King has been in theaters for almost two months and it will remain in the top five this weekend with about $4 million. It’s one of the biggest hits of all time and there’s not much more than needs to be said.
Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw and Overcomer should be in a close race for fifth place with $3 million each.
