Theater Averages: Lion King Says Goodbye to the Competition

July 25, 2019

The Lion King

The Lion King not only earned first place on the overall chart, but it topped the theater average chart with an average of $40,586. Last week’s winner, The Farewell, landed in second place with an average of $32,723. David Crosby: Remember My Name was the final film in the $10,000 club earning an average of $10,871 in four theaters.

There were only a couple of other new limited release that did well. A Faithful Man opened with $7,321 in its lone theater, while Cassandro the Exotico earned $5,686, also in one theater. I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians struggled barely missing the Mendoza Line with an opening of $2,083 in one theater. TINY: The Life of Erin Blackwell wasn’t as lucky with $1,631, again in one theater. Rosie only managed an average of $1,471 in two theaters. Finally, At War was right behind with $1,405 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Art of Self-Defense expanded into more than 500 theaters helping it earn more than $1 million over the weekend, so it reached the first major milestone. Its theater average is below $2,000, so it won’t get to many more.
  • Super 30 got to $1 million before the weekend and it held up much better than most Bollywood films do, so this shouldn’t be the end.
  • Wild Rose was one of four films to reach $1 million since this time last week and like the rest, it has a good shot at $2 million.
  • The Farewell also made it to $1 million and since it had the second best theater average of the weekend, it clearly has more room to expand.
  • The Biggest Little Farm reached $4 million very early in the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
  • Late Night finally made it to $15 million.
