Friday Estimates: Endgame Nearly Matches The Force Awakens
May 4, 2019
Avengers: Endgame dominated the Friday box office with $40.64 million for the day. By comparison, The Force Awakens earned $49.33 million during its second Friday of release; however that was Christmas Day, which is one of the best days of the year. Endgame should have better legs over the rest of the weekend and could close the gap by the end of Sunday. I’m not convinced that will happen, but it should still beat our $140 million prediction, so I’m sure Disney will be more than happy with this performance. Furthermore, the film topped $500 million in just its eighth day of release, beating The Force Awakens previous record of 10 days, and will get to $600 million by the end of the weekend, 2 days faster than Awakens reached that milestone.
The Intruder started off in second place with $3.91 million on Friday, but terrible reviews and a genre that tends to be front-loaded will likely mean it doesn’t last there long. That said, it should top $10 million over the weekend, which is a good start for a film that reportedly only cost $5 million to make.
Long Shot was next with $3.63 million, but as a romantic comedy, it should have better legs. However, while its reviews are the best of the new releases and will be among the best in the top ten, it only managed a B from CinemaScore, which is a disappointing result. Look for an opening weekend of just under $11 million. This is not a good start for a film that cost $40 million to make and it will have to become a much, much bigger hit on the home market to break even.
UglyDolls earned $2.5 million on Friday, putting it on pace for about $9 million over the full weekend. Its reviews are terrible and it only managed a B plus from CinemaScore. Family films, even mediocre ones, tend to earn at least an A minus from CinemaScore, so this is a bad result.
Captain Marvel earned fifth place on Friday with $1.21 million; however, Breakthrough was close enough behind with $1.14 million that it will likely climb ahead over the full weekend. Regardless, it will be a close race with both films earning about $4 million.
