Theater Averages: Wife has a Blazing Hot Start

August 22, 2018

The Wife

The Wife topped the theater average chart over the weekend with an average of $27,071 in four theaters. The film’s reviews are amazing and Glenn Close is earning some Oscar buzz, so perhaps it will stick around for a while. We the Animals was next with an average of $21,119 in three theaters. Blaze was also playing in three theaters earning an average of $14,750.

None of the rest of the other new limited releases came close to the $10,000 club. Memoir of War barely managed to get halfway there with an average of $5,827 in two theaters. The widest release of the week, The Spy Gone North, earned an average of $4,388 in 31 theaters. Juliet, Naked struggled with an average of $3,582 in 17 theaters. There were also two films that missed the Mendoza Line. Minding the Gap earned an average of just $1,703 in four theaters. Finally there’s Billionaire Boy’s Club, which earned $618 in 10 theaters. That’s not an average of $618 in 10 theaters; that’s a total of $618 in 10 theaters. Its average is just $62. This is one of the worst opening averages of this century.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days just made it to $1 million over the weekend. It won’t get to $2 million, but this is still a good result for a foreign-language film. Hopefully it means more South Korean films will get releases here.
  • As expected, Blindspotting reached $4 million. Also as expected, it won’t get to $5 million.
  • Three Identical Strangers made it all the way to $10 million, which is amazing for a documentary. $15 million isn’t out of the question, but it will be really difficult.
