International Box Office: The Meg Continues to Terrorize the Competition

August 21, 2018

The Meg

The Meg remained in first place on the international chart with $68.9 million on 23,767 screens in 55 markets, for totals of $232.2 million internationally and $316.0 million worldwide. Its biggest new market of the weekend was Australia, where it earned first place with $2.48 million on 413 screens. It also opened in South Korea, but struggled with $1.57 million on 598 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.19 million. Its biggest market overall was China, where it added $30.78 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $117.09 million. It fell just 38% during its sophomore stint, while it actually rose to second place, despite there being four new releases in the top ten. That’s stunning.

The Island remained in first place in China and second place internationally with $38.87 million over the weekend for a total of $162.28 million after just ten days of release.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation returned to the top five in third place with $28.00 million on 27,914 screens in 60 markets for totals of $272.14 million internationally and $426.10 million worldwide. Most of the film’s weekend haul came from China, where it only managed six place, but pulled in $16.86 million. This is actually a really good result for an animated film in that marketplace. It’s incredibly rare for animated films to reach even $100 million in total in China, so I think Sony will be very happy with this result. The film has yet to open in Italy, Poland, and Japan and could end up the number one hit in the franchise by the time it’s done.

Mission: Impossible—Fallout remained in fourth place with $20.5 million in 61 markets for totals of $320.7 million internationally and $501.7 million worldwide. The film again had no major market openings, but it opened in Italy and China by the end of the month.

Europe Raiders rounded out the top five with $19.73 million from China.

We continue our tracking of the two billion dollar hits currently on the international chart. Incredibles 2 fell to tenth place with $8.9 million in 34 markets for totals of $526.8 million internationally and $1.121 billion worldwide. It is about to overtake Transformers: Dark of the Moon for 20th place on the all-time chart.

Meanwhile, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was down to just $2.8 million over the weekend for totals of $878.2 million internationally and $1.290 billion worldwide. It looks like 12th place on the all-time list is as high as it will go.
