In the Mouth of Madness

It is an incredibly slow week on the home market. Most of the films in the main list would be filler on even a below average week. The only real exception is Ready Player One, which did earn better than expected reviews, but it’s still not Pick of the Week material. There were a few actual contenders for that title, including Gravity Falls: The Complete Series and A Matter of Life and Death, but in the end, I went with In the Mouth of Madness on Blu-ray.

Beyond Re-animator - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The first of two or three Lovecraft films on this week’s list. This is arguably the weakest, but still worth checking out for fans of Lovecraftian horror. Extras include an audio commentary track, isolated score / interview track, a trio of additional interview featurettes, and more, so if you are a fan of the movie, it is certainly worth picking up.

Dagon - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The second of two or three Lovecraft films on this week’s list. This one earned better reviews than the previous one, but it is a low budget film, so keep that in mind. Extras include an audio commentary track, a trio of interview featurettes, and more. It is also worth picking up for fans of the author’s work.

Gravity Falls: The Complete Series - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An amazing animated show that is aimed at kids, but will also entertain adults who are fans of X-Files, Lovecraft, etc. There is a bonus disc of extras included in the Collector’s edition and it is absolutely a Pick of the Week Contender.

Half the Picture - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An amazing documentary that features interviews with countless women filmmakers. It struggled in theaters and it isn’t selling well enough to be included here, but it is a slow week and I can ignore the usual guidelines when the quality of a film justifies it. On the other hand, the lack of extras does prevent it from being a Pick of the Week contender.

In the Mouth of Madness - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The third of two or three Lovecraft films on this week’s list. It’s not technically based on a story by H.P.Lovecraft, but I think it does Lovecraftian horror better than almost any other movie out there. There are a ton of extras on the Blu-ray, including many that are new. These new extras include an audio commentary track, new interview featurette and more. The archival extras include a second audio commentary track, making of featurette and more. It is the Pick of the Week, but I am biased towards this film.

Little Pink House - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Catherine Keener stars in this real life story of Eminent domain. Its reviews are good and it is worth checking out, but lack of extras hurt. Call it a solid rental, leaning towards a purchase.

A Matter of Life and Death: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A film from the 1940s about a World War II aviator whose life is miraculously spared. Only it wasn’t a miracle that saved his life. It was a clerical error made in Heaven. Now that they’ve caught the error, they’ve come to fix it. It is an all-time classic movie and Criterion Collection rarely disappoints when it comes to extras, so it is a clear Pick of the Week contender.

One Strange Rock - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A documentary series about the Earth interviewing the people who have left it, i.e., Astronauts. It is produced by Darren Aronofsky, so its solid reviews are not a surprise. Worth picking up.

Operation Red Sea - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
An action film from China. It’s reviews are excellent, but it does have an overt jingoistic angle to it. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of Hollywood films that are overly jingoistic and there’s nothing wrong with that per se. In fact, it makes it more intriguing as a cultural artifact. Others might be turned off by this. Like most foreign-language releases, there are not a lot of extras as there are just some deleted scenes.

A Quiet Place - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I was able to get to the review this week. Was it worth the wait? Or did it fail to live up to the hype? Read our review to find out.

Ready Player One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This is by far the biggest release of the week. It cost $150 million to make and pulled in nearly $600 million worldwide. On the downside, it reportedly cost $150 million to advertise, so it still needs nearly $100 million in revenue to break even. Extras include half-a-dozen featurettes, which is good for a first-run release. I would have liked an audio commentary track, but Steven Spielberg doesn’t do that.

Supergirl - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
One of the worst super hero movies ever made. It was used as a reason to not make super hero movies with female leads. It should be used as a reason to not make bad super hero movies.

When Calls The Heart: My Heart Is Yours - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The latest release in the When Calls The Heart series.

It’s a really slow week on the secondary releases. I Walk Alone is the release that I’m most interested in. If you like Anime, Saiyuki Reload Blast and Twin Star Exorcists are worth picking up.
