Home Market Releases for July 10th, 2018
July 10, 2018
It’s still summer and that means the home market is still terrible. There are less than a dozen new releases on disc on this week’s list, and a lot of them feel like filler. Half of them wouldn’t make the list during a moderately busy week. Only one of them, A Quiet Place, truly stands out and the Blu-ray Combo Pack is easily the Pick of the Week. It’s not the only release worth picking up, as both Lean on Pete on Blu-ray and The Magicians: Season Three are worth picking up.

This is a Sci-fi Harem Anime based on a long-running franchise. It’s not a very good show, but it is selling better than expected.
One of the best sports movies ever made. It isn’t the first time it has been released on Blu-ray, but the Criterion Collection is the best Blu-ray release, which should be no surprise. Unfortunately, there’s not a ton of new extras; instead it is a collection of older extras, some dating back to the early 1990s. If you are a fan of the movie, then it is worth picking up.
Video on Demand
This film earned good reviews, but it opened in about 1,500 theaters, which is awkward number to deal with and this was likely one of the reasons it struggled at the box office. There are two featurettes with a total running time of 40 minutes, which isn’t bad considering its box office numbers. Call it a solid rental, leaning towards a purchase.
Bailee Madison stars as a teen movie star who breaks up with her boyfriend on the red carpet. Then a video goes viral where a small town boy asks her to prom and she agrees to go in order to rehabilitate her image. Like most Hallmark Channel original movies, there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but if you are in the target audience for this film, you probably know if you want to watch it, based just on the cast.
A British murder mystery show that has been earning amazing reviews for years. This season is essentially six 90-minute TV movies. If you look at them as six TV movies, then the price is worth it. If you compare it to regular TV on DVD releases, the price-per-minute is high.

I got an offer to review this film, but I wasn’t able to take it on, because I didn’t think I would have the time. That’s too bad, because the reviews are excellent. It did well in limited release, but there’s only one featurette on the DVD / Blu-ray. It is still worth picking up, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender.
Video on Demand
This is one of those films that would have been dropped as filler in even a normal week. It did better than most in limited release, but its reviews are weak and there’s no reason to buy over renting. Even then, you would only want to rent this if you are a fan of the two leads.
This is the second Jean-Claude Van Damme movie I’ve reviewed recently. Is it better than Black Eagle? Yes. But is it good enough to be worth picking up? Read my review to find out.
This is one of those shows that I’ve seen enough to know I like it, but I never seem to have enough time to keep up with the episodes. The reviews are getting better, but the only extras on this release are a gag reel. It is worth checking out for fans, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender.
Video on Demand
I put in a request for this title, but a screener has not yet arrived. I just have to look at the film’s Tomatometer Score once to know it is Pick of the Week contender. According to the press release, the DVD has no extras, but the Blu-ray has a trio of behind-the-scenes / making-of featurettes. That’s not a lot compared to its box office numbers, but there is not a lot of competition, so it is the Pick of the Week.
Video on Demand
The second Hallmark Channel original movie coming out this week. This one stars Rachael Leigh Cook, who gets into a love triangle at work when the CEO and CFO both fall in love with her.

A Quiet Place - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
There are only two 4K releases this week, but one of them is the biggest and best release of the week.
No Megasets on this week’s release. It is a slow time of year for these releases.
