Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

It's March 8th, which is International Women's Day. This is the one day a year where men flood Twitter asking, "Why isn't there an International Men's Day." ... There is. It's November 19th. ... Anyway, it isn't a great week for new releases. The biggest release is The Peanuts Movie and its 3D Combo Pack is a Pick of the Week contender. However, it just misses out on that title to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Season 1.

Community: The Complete Sixth Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD
They made it. They made it to six seasons and there is a movie in the works. The reviews were stellar for the final season, so fans of the show will want to grab the DVD right away. If you haven't seen it, it is on Hulu in the States and Netflix in Canada.

Grease Live! - - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The first time I watched the movie, I didn't like it, the second time it got on my nerves, and by the third time I actively hated it. (Short review... The song, "Summer Nights" has Danny telling his friends about the girl he met over summer. One of his friends asks, "Did she put up a fight?" This might have been okay in the 1970s when the musical / movie first came out, because people didn't know better, but times have changed.) I was really hoping they would have changed the lyric for the live performance. They didn't.

In the Heart of the Sea - - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack or 3D Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This was one of the biggest bombs of last fall, as it cost $100 million to make, but only brought in $25 million domestically. The extras are better than expected given its box office performance, while its reviews are mixed. Call it a rental, at best.

Macbeth - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A Shakespeare adaptation starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. The reviews were great, but it never caught on with moviegoers. This explains why the only extras are a couple of featurettes. It is still worth picking up, especially if you are a fan of the play, but it is not a Pick of the Week Contender.

Manhattan: Season 2 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This show is about the Manhattan Project, which was the World War II project to develop a nuclear weapon before the Axis powers did. The second season of the show earned better reviews than the first season, and the first season was already amazing.

NFL Super Bowl 50 Champions: Denver Broncos - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
So that's who won the Superbowl.

Open Season: Scared Silly - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The first film in the franchise came out nearly a decade ago. It was okay, compared to the average kids movie, but nothing more. That said, there have been three direct-to-DVD sequels that have been released since then, so clearly the target audience loves the show.

The Peanuts Movie - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 3D Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A great hit of nostalgia that did okay with audiences. It is going to need help on the home market to break even. There are plenty of extras on the DVD and the Blu-ray, including some exclusives on the latter. It is definitely a Pick of the Week contender.

Punk's Dead: SLC Punk 2 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
SLC Punk wasn't a massive hit in limited release, nor was it beloved by critics, so it is a little strange it is getting a delayed sequel so many years later. It is selling rather well on Amazon.com, so maybe there was an audience waiting for this movie.

Rookie Blue - The Final Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is a summer TV show that lasted six seasons. It never earned great reviews, but it clearly had to have a lot of fans to last that long.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Ellie Kemper stars as a woman rescued from a strange apocalyptic cult, who moves to New York City and has trouble adapting to her new life. It was originally picked up by NBC and I was super excited to see it. Then it was canceled before a single episode aired. Fortunately, Netflix picked up the series and aired all episodes last year. I binged-watched the series when it first came out and the DVD is Pick of the Week material. I can't wait for the second season.

Victor Frankenstein - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
So much talent. Such a terrible movie. Skip it.

Victoria - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is a German film about a young woman, Victoria, who runs away from home and meets up with three men. She thinks they are just going out partying, but they instead rob a bank. The film is done in one take, but the critics say it is not just a gimmick and the film is worth watching for its other strengths as well.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon: Coming Home, Daddy's Home, A Fish Story, Hero Quest, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, and The Mask You Live In
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 is the biggest VOD release of the week, but it is so big that I would wait to buy either the Blu-ray or the Franchise Box Set.

Xanadu - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is a bad movie. This is a much worse movie than its Tomatometer Score would indicate, because it is beloved by a lot of people because it is so bad. On the other hand, if you are a fan of bad movies, then this is a must-own. And if you like really bad movies, then grabbing Howard the Duck on Blu-ray is another option.

Yu-Gi-oh! GX: Season 3 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This release was part of the contest than ended on Friday. We will announce the winner shortly.
