The Revenant

The Golden Globes were handed out on Sunday evening. There were a few minor surprises and some infuriating results. On the other hand, no one film truly dominated, with The Revenant leading the way with just three wins. Only two other movies earned more than one win, The Martian and Steve Jobs.

Notes and Reactions...

  • The Revenant earned three wins, including Best Drama, Best Director, and Best Lead Actor.
  • Carol earned five nominations, but was shut out on Sunday night. Spotlight, The Big Short, and Mad Max: Fury Road were also expected to do well, but were shut out over the weekend.
  • The Martian isn't a comedy. If I were voting for the Golden Globes, I would have not voted for this film either in the Best Comedy or Musical or Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, because it isn't a comedy. It worked this year, so expect more of this crap in the future.
  • Brie Larson won Best Actress in a Drama for her performance in Room. This isn't a true surprise, as her performance is amazing. That said, the film is arguably the smallest of the four films nominated and I was worried it would slip between the cracks.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio won his third Golden Globe out of ten nominations. He's close to a 90% lock to win the Oscar at this point. He deserves the Oscar at this point. I hope the day after he wins the Oscar he announces his next movie will be a remake of Critters 3.
  • Lily Tomlin lost out to Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. I really like Jennifer Lawrence, but overall Joy wasn't that good and Lily Tomlin deserved the win.
  • Kate Winslet won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Steve Jobs. This is arguably the least interesting result that could have happened here. I wanted Alicia Vikander to win for Ex Machina, because Sci-fi films rarely do well during Awards Season, even when they clearly deserve to be recognized.
  • Sylvester Stallone won Best Supporting Actor for Creed. He's been acting for 40 years and this is the first major award he's been given. Granted, for most of his career, he hasn't chosen roles that were challenging.
  • Aaron Sorkin won Best Screenplay for Steve Jobs, which is the most boring of the five choices. I'm not saying it is a bad screenplay, but the other films were more interesting.
  • Inside Out winning for Best Animated Film was the least surprising result of the night.
  • The Hateful Eight's only win was by Ennio Morricone for Best Original Score. I was expecting it to win Best Screenplay as well.
