International Box Office: Mars is in Ascension
October 8, 2015
The Martian opened in first place with $45.2 million on 9,299 screens in 50 markets. This includes a first place, 10.01 million opening on 582 theaters in the U.K. This was the biggest opening for both the director and the star. The film had a similarly strong opening in Australia earning first place with $4.28 million on 582 screens. It also earned first place in Hong Kong ($2.26 million on 70 screens) and Taiwan ($1.68 million on 137 screens). It only managed second place in Italy with $2.53 million on 464 screens and in Mexico with $2.9 million on 1,757, while it debuted in third place in Brazil with $1.82 million on 507. Overall, the film it doing about as well internationally as it did here, which is good news for Fox.
Lost in Hong Kong was pushed into second place with $41 million in 6 markets for a two-week total of $204 million. Over the full week in China, the film earned first place with $101.83 million for a running tally of $209.07 million.
Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe was next with $34 million over the weekend for a five-day opening of $69.30 million.
The third Chinese film in a row on the chart was Goodbye Mr. Loser, which opened with $26 million over the weekend for a five-day total of $42.06 million.
Hotel Transylvania 2 fell to fifth place with $20.4 million in 51 markets over the weekend for a two-week total of $53.4 million. The film had no major market openings, but it held on strongly in a number of markets. This includes Venezuela, where it grew by 2% to $2.54 million on 114 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $6.38 million. Its biggest market was Mexico, where it remained in first place with $4.63 million on 2,344 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.87 million after just two weeks of release. In both markets, the film has already topped the original. This is great news for its box office potential and there's almost no way there will not be another installment in the franchise.
Everest fell to sixth place with $16.4 million in 66 markets over the weekend for a running tally of $103.3 million after three weeks of release. Getting to $100 million internationally will help save face, but it isn't quite enough for profitability. It would probably need $150 million internationally / $200 million worldwide to break even. The film opens in Japan at the beginning of next month, so it does have a shot at getting there.
The Intern fell a couple of spots to seventh with $15.7 million in 58 markets over the weekend for an international total of $35.6 million. The film's biggest opening came from Australia where it earned second place with $1.40 million on 305 screens, while it only managed fourth place in the U.K. with $1.16 million in 431 theaters. On the other hand, the film remained in first place in South Korea with $3.79 million on 659 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $10.04 million. It will earn more internationally than it will domestically, and it is going to make enough domestically to be a midlevel hit. Warner Bros. should make a profit here, but it won't be a major hit.
The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials fell from fourth to eighth place with $13.7 million in 59 markets for totals of $147.8 million internationally and $211.2 million worldwide. Its biggest single market is South Korea where it has pulled in $17.72 million, including $1.31 million on 414 screens over the weekend. The film has made enough to cover its production budget, but it will need to earn more to break even before the home market.
Inside Out was next with $12.6 million in 26 markets for totals of $438.4 million internationally and $792.3 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in Germany with $6.43 million on 888 screens, which was just ahead of local hit, Fack ju Göhte 2. This is the third best opening for Pixar in that market. Next week, it opens in China and it should top $800 million worldwide along the way.
Jie jiu wu xian sheng, a.k.a., Saving Mr. Wu was the fourth Chinese film on this week's list. The film landed in tenth place with $7 million over the weekend for a five-day opening of $14.98 million.
