Candy Just as Sweet the Second Time Around

April 25, 2006

There were no new releases to top $10,000 on the per theatre charts this weekend, but there were two holdovers to manage that feat. Hard Candy repeated on the top of the per theatre chart despite falling 35% to $18,901, which is a steep drop-off for a limited release. Second place went to Sir! No, Sir!. That film, which had been playing in San Francisco and Oakland for the past two weeks, opened at the IFC Center earning $11,930 during its first weekend there.

Of the new releases, it was the overall box office leader, Silent Hill, that led the way with an average of $6,887. The best limited release of the week was The Celestine Prophecy, which earned just over $25,000 during the weekend for an average of $5,059 while earning $32,000 since Wednesday. Somersault also did well with an average of $4,313 in five theatres. On the other hand, most of the rest of the new limited release flopped with Mongolian Ping Pong taking in an average of $1,626 and Still Standing earning $12,762 in 15 for an average of just $851. But that was miles ahead of In Her Line of Fire as that film made just $232 in 2 theatres for an average of $116.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple Per Theatre Charts alumni:

  • Friends with Money expanded to nearly 1000 theatres and that helped it reach $4 million over the weekend while it hit $5 million by Monday. Its expansion prospects are limited at this point, but it should still hit another milestone or two.
  • The same is true for Thank You for Smoking, which made it to $15 million over the weekend but will not be expanding much past its 1,020 theatre count.
