International Details - Winning by a Hair
October 7, 2007
Hairspray managed to climb into sixth place by the narrowest of margins earning $4.59 million on 2073 screens in 37 markets for a running tally of $54.35 million. This includes a third place, $1.36 million opening on 302 screens in Italy, which is close to its opening domestically, when you take into account the relative size of the two markets. On the other hand, many muscials prove to be difficult to market internationally and it was never likely that this film would match its domestic run. However, it has already made enough to be considered a financial success.
- Superbad slipped to seventh place with $4.55 million on 1258 screens in 13 markets for a still early total of $16.87 million. The film expanded wide in Russia taking in $957,000 on 300 screens over the weekend and $1.22 million overall. However, it was the U.K. where it shined the brightest as it earned $1.54 million on 358 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.71 million in total. This film is not doing as well as Knocked Up did, (for instance, that film had $13.08 million after three weekends in the U.K.), but with a sub-$20 million budget, it has made enough to become a massive financial hit during its domestic run and whatever it earns now is pure gravy.
- No Reservations returned to eighth place with $4.12 million on 2148 screens in 47 markets for a total of $36.94 million. The film opened in fourth place in Japan with $1.04 million on 291 screens, but that's way below the $5000 per screen average most winners open with. On the other hand, it held well in Spain down just 39% to $938,000 on 300 screens over the weekend for $2.91 million after two.
- Evan Almighty showed some strength this weekend climbing into the top ten with $3.78 million on 1287 screens in 31 markets for a total of $62.27 million. If the film can earn $75 million internationally, which is should, the studio will be able to say it earned as much worldwide as it officially cost to make and that should save someone their job. The film opened in second place in Italy with $1.83 million on 294 screens, which would have been very respectable had it been made for under $100 million.
- 99 Francs opened in first place in France with $3.78 million on 407 screens, which was enough for 10th place internationally.
- Hero fell out of the top ten internationally with $3.57 million on 475 screens in Japan. However that was still enough for first place in its native market and lifted its running tally to $49.57 million so far.
- Rush Hour 3 climbed a spot to 12th with $3.25 million on 1868 screens in 34 markets for a total of $78.33 million. The film opened in first place in both Australia, ($2.65 million on 270 screens), and in Spain, ($1.33 million on 325 screens). Had the film had a reasonable production budget, it would have made a profit by now.
- Surf's Up added $2.75 million on 1827 screens in 30 markets for a total of $50.17 million internationally, which is closing in on its domestic run.
- A Love remained in first place in South Korea with $2.47 million on 390 screens over the weekend and $10.31 million in total.
- The Simpsons Movie collapsed this weekend down 53% and more than 10 places. It landed in 15th with $2.35 million on 1037 screens in 5 markets for a total of $336.93 million, which is close to double what it earned domestically. The only market of note was Italy where it remained in first place with $1.94 million on 465 screens over the weekend for a total of $20.84 million after three. This is more than Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End made after three weeks in Italy.
- Underdog was flat this week added $2.17 million on 861 screens in 12 markets for a total of $6.26 million. The film expanded in Australia but only managed ninth place with $425,000 on 229 screens for a total of $828,000. Meanwhile it was down just 20% during its second weekend in Mexico with $906,000 on 300 screens for a two-week total of $2.29 million.
- Atonement added $2.10 million on 618 screens in 3 markets for a total of $18.45 million so far. Almost all of that has come from the U.K. where it has made $17.34 million including $1.77 million on 413 screens over the weekend. Meanwhile it made $277,000 on 194 screens in Italy for a $1.05 million total and it opened in fifth place in Finland with $57,000 on 11 screens.
- Stardust rocketed up more than 10 spots to 18th with $2.09 million on 694 screens in 13 markets for a total of $22.54 million. The film had no major openings, but did do well in a number of smaller markets like Portugal where it made $211,000 on 55 screens for second place and Hong Kong where it captured third with $281,000 on 21 screens.
- Shrek the Third fell to 19th place with $2.02 million on 2282 screens in 15 markets for a total of $467.08 million. It is now just over $10 million behind the international total of Shrek 2 despite earning more than $100 million less domestically.
- For the fourth weekend in a row, Run, Fatboy, Run led the U.K. marketplace. Despite there being five new films in the top ten, it was down just 17% to $2.02 million on 398 screens over the weekend for a total of $15.96 million. On a side note, Hot Fuzz wasn't able to stay in first place for four weeks, but it still earned more during that weekend, ($2.55 million on 452 screens), while having brought in $34.70 million already.
- Lust, Caution earned $4.81 million during its international debut, but only $1.98 million of that came from the weekend. It debuted on 111 screens in 3 markets, including Hong Kong where it earned $1.42 million on 62 screens.
- 12 (Razgnevannyh Muzhchin) climbed to first place in Russia and 22nd internationally with $1.95 million on 374 screens over the weekend and $4.47 million in total.
- Mongol added $1.84 million on 417 screens in Russia for a total of $4.78 million after two weeks.
- Knocked Up was down just 18% this weekend without any major openings. Its biggest came in Holland where it opened in second place with $312,000 on 65 screens over the weekend and $361,000 in total. Overall the film added $1.54 million on 1051 screens in 23 markets for a total of $53.97 million with a few major markets left to debut in.
- 1408 didn't have any major or midlevel openings this weekend, but it remained solid with $1.53 million on 633 screens in 14 markets for a total of $22.72 million. The film opened in first place in Turkey with $310,000 on 71 screens while it had to settle for third in Portugal with $132,000 on 30. The next major test is Mexico, where it opens at the end of the month, while it doesn't finish its run till February when it debuts in Japan.
- The Invasion reached the charts for the first time during its international run placing 26th with $1.52 million on 552 screens in 8 markets for an early total of $7.04 million. This week it opened in Mexico earning fourth place with $596,000 on 292 screens which is better than its opening here, but not be enough to be optimistic about its chances.
- Closed Note opened in second place in Japan and 27th internationally with $1.51 million on 294 screens in its native market.
- Perfect Stranger returned to the charts in 28th place with $1.48 million on 320 screens in 2 markets for a total of $43.97 million. Almost all of that came from Japan where it placed third with $1.47 million on 296 screens, almost reaching the $5000 per screen average that usually separates the hits from the misses in that market.
- Disturbia fell to 29th place with $1.46 million on 1232 screens in 27 markets for a total of $34.44 million.
- L'Invite grabbed the final spot in the top 30 with $1.40 million on 490 screens for a total of $3.70 million, all but a rounding error of which came from France.
There were also a few other releases to debut this week but failed to reach the top 30. Halloween managed $1.26 million on 372 screens over the weekend in the U.K. placing fifth there. Michael Clayton opened in sixth place in that market with $1.23 million on 295 screens.
Meanwhile Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix reportedly crossed the $100 million mark in the U.K. and now has $100.45 million there. This isn't an unprecedented box office there, but it would be like reaching $500 - $600 million here.
