DVD and Blu-ray Releases for October 1st, 2013
October 1, 2013
This list is a little short and a little late, because WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THE INTERNET? The past three days, the internet has been slow as hell. There are a number of interesting releases coming out this week, several of them have screeners that are on their way. Unfortunately, only one screener did arrive on time. Fortunately, it was The Little Mermaid on Blu-ray Combo Pack and it, or the 3D Combo Pack, are worthy of Pick of the Week.

The screener just arrived, but I will get to it A.S.A.P. Assuming I don't snap because of the internet. Seriously. A simple Google search took more than a minute to complete.
The screener for this one arrived, but too late to get the review done. Screeners have to be on my desk by Friday to get a review done by Monday.
Not a lot of secondary releases.
There are six 3D releases on this week's list, including three major theatrical releases. It could be a good week for the format.
I love Bond, but wow! They are squeezing every last penny out of fans with these practically yearly box sets. They are almost as bad Star Trek.
I haven't gotten a single Christmas release so far this year. I am so, so happy.
This film was a big hit during the spring earning nearly $200 million domestically and nearly $600 million worldwide. The reviews were really good for a kids movie, but not at the level where it is essential viewing for adults.
Yet another release celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. I haven't seen enough episodes to call myself a true fan, but I've seen enough to know I like the show. On the other hand, I know there are simply too many releases for me to even attempt to start collecting them.
Good show, but they are releasing too many DVD and Blu-rays making it a cash grab, but not a worthwhile pickup.
A period piece / adventure written and directed by Luc Besson. I'm intrigued. Its reviews are amazing. I might have to give this film a blind buy.
This environmental documentary focuses on the activist side of things. The film's reviews are good, but not great. It tackles a lot of different subjects, so it is a little fractured in its composition. Still, if you like environmental documentaries, it is worth checking out.
This film opened in limited release but went nowhere at the box office. The reviews were not good, but not that bad. Extras are good with an audio commentary track, deleted and extended scenes, making of featurette, etc. Worth checking out, maybe even worth picking up, if you like the cast and / or genre.
I liked the first couple of seasons, but it struggled during season three and I think it got worse in season four. At least that's the opinion I get from reading viewer reviews from various places. Also, given the ratings decline, a pretty large chunk of the fanbase has given up on the show since its peak.
This screener arrived, but it arrived too late to get the review done. I will get to it A.S.A.P.
This movie is the movie that brought the Disney Animation Studio back to life. But shortly after this film came out, the studio made some classics. Does this film live up to Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King? Check out our review for my opinion.
Still waiting for the screener this show. There are so many screeners that arrived late recently that it might take a while to get fully caught up.
A documentary TV series narrated by Tom Selleck and Rutger Hauer. There are not a lot of reviews online, but the ones I've read have been very positive.
One of my favorite cartoons of all time mixed with some of my favorite super heroes of all time. I have to get a copy of this to review.
Not a fan of the new incarnation of the TMNT. Then again, I wasn't a huge fan of the original cartoon.
I'm hoping to get a screener for this release, but it is late. The reviews were excellent and if you like Judd Apatow style of Buddy Comedies, you will likely love this movie as well. The Blu-ray is loaded with extras so it is easily worth picking up.
Not a lot of Megasets this week, but the one here is worth picking up, if you haven't started collecting the single-season sets already.
This is a film that a lot of people had high expectations for, because it was based on a book that really did something new with the zombie genre. Did the film utilize the strength of the book? Or was it more or less just another zombie movie? Read our review to find out.
