Weekend Estimates: The Other Woman Averts April Fourpeat for Captain America
April 27, 2014
By every measure, April at the box office has been dominated by Captain America: Winter Soldier, but it won't win every weekend this month, thanks to a jaunty $24.7 million debut for The Other Woman. The comedy, headlined by Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton hasn't been a huge hit with critics, but audiences are giving it a solid 70% at Rotten Tomatoes, which is plenty for a comedy (The Heat, by comparison, earns a 72% positive audience score at Rotten Tomatoes, though it started higher). A strong run in theaters certainly seems possible for The Other Woman, given its competition over the next few weeks will mostly come from male-skewing films (Moms' Night Out being the only exception).
Winter Soldier will post about $16 million for the weekend in second place, down 37% from last weekend. It is well past $200 million now, and will top $250 million comfortably, but the arrival of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 next weekend will knock it from its perch as the go-to superhero movie.
The other two new wide releases are opening soft this weekend. Brick Mansions will pick up around $9.6 million from 2,647 theaters for fifth place. Given a relatively modest $28 million budget and foreign pre-sales, it should end up more-or-less breaking even. The Quiet Ones, meanwhile, will pick up $4 million from 2,027 theaters, which will leave it a long way short of recovering its advertising budget.
In limited release, Locke will earn around $89,000 from four theaters this weekend for an average over $22,000. It's the only film in the $10,000 club, at least among films to report so far. Fading Gigolo does come close though, with $322,620 projected in 37 theaters for an average a little under $9,000.
