"Revisionist Western" Movies
This subgenre started in the 1960s by people who realized that the tropes used in classical westerns were ahistorical and often quite harmful. For example, there is not always such a clear black and white distinction between the good guys and the bad guys allowing for more nuanced characters. Additionally, the portrayal of Native Americans and women changed to be less problematic giving these characters stronger roles as well.
