Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.
For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.
We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.
Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

In terms of box office competition, last weekend brought about a plethora of films vying for that number one spot, with newcomer The Boy and the Heron leading the way with just over $13 million in its opening three days. Fighting for second spot was The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and Godzilla Minus One, with the former outpacing the latter $9.3 million to $8.6 million. This week a beloved literary and movie character comes back to the big screen to tell the story of his youth.

This week brings about five new wide releases including Beyoncé’s own concert film with the release of RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCÉ

Theater counts: The Marvels holds on as widest release despite a flurry of newcomers
November 16th, 2023
After a much lower than expected start for The Marvels last weekend, the latest Marvel film will remain the widest release this week, while four new wide releases make their way into theaters in time for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The Marvels will hold steady in 4,030 locations this week after collecting just over $46 million during its first three days. While an impressive haul by most standards, it posted the lowest earning opening weekend for an MCU film to date.

November 9th, 2023
After a rather lackluster week at the box office, this weekend should see a definite uptick, brought on largely by the release of The Marvels. Three other wide releases also make their cinematic debuts, including It’s a Wonderful Knife, Journey to Bethlehem, and Saturday’s release of Bollywood action feature, Tiger 3.

New on Disc: Trolls Tower Above the Competition
July 7th, 2020
Trolls World Tour is coming out on physical media this week, on all four major formats: DVD, Blu-ray, 3D, and 4K Ultra HD. However, while it is easily the biggest release of the week, it isn’t the best. There are two contenders for Pick of the Week, Murdoch Mysteries: Season 13 and The War of the Worlds: Criterion Collection. The War of the Worlds is the Pick of the Week, but Murdoch Mysteries does get the rarely-awarded Puck of the Week, for Best Canadian Release.
