Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.
For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.
We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.
Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.
Theater Counts: Black Widow poised to remain widest release, but Space Jam close behind
July 15th, 2021
After snagging over $100 million in domestic theatrical earnings in its first six days, Black Widow returns this week with an additional 115 theaters (totaling 4,275), securing its place once again as the widest release of the week. One of three new wide releases this week is the live action/animated hybrid comedy, Space Jam: A New Legacy, starring current NBA legend LeBron James. The film debuts this week in 3,950 locations. The original Space Jam, which starred another NBA icon in Michael Jordan, scored $250 million worldwide when it was released back in November of 1996.

Theater Counts: Black Widow will debut in 4,160 theaters
July 8th, 2021
After two weeks on top of both the box office charts and the theater count list, F9: The Fast Saga will take a back seat to the long-awaited arrival of Black Widow. The film from Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios will debut in 4,160 theaters and will also be available to order on Disney+ with Premier Access. That theater count is a shade lower than the 4,179 theaters F9 opened in over the June 25 weekend, but still the second best of the pandemic era.
