DVD and Blu-ray Releases for October 18th, 2011
October 18th, 2011
It should be a relatively good week in terms of DVD and Blu-ray sales with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides leading the way. However, it's not a particularly deep week in terms of home market releases. Nor is it really strong when it comes to contenders for Pick of the Week. Degrassi: Season Ten is in competition, but in the end I went with Robotech: The Complete Series.

Per Theater Chart: Weather Dampens Specialty Releases
August 30th, 2011
Normally I disregard weather effects on the box office; after all, even big storms generally only affect a small fraction of the population of the domestic market. However, Irene caused theaters in New York City to be closed for Saturday and Sunday, which had a huge impact on limited releases and none of the new ones reached that $10,000 mark on the per theater chart. Red State did earn that much in its lone theater over the weekend, while the closest any new release came was Higher Ground with an average of $7,165 in three theaters.

Per Theater Chart: State Makes Senna See Red
August 24th, 2011
Red State continued its run of special engagements this past weekend earning $25,800 in one theater. The only other film to reach the $10,000 mark was Senna, which earned an average of $11,365 in 14 theaters.

Weekend Estimates: Weak Field Gifts The Help Top Spot
August 21st, 2011
Four weak debut weekends has gifted The Help a win at the box office as the historical drama posted an impressive 21% decline from last weekend to earn an estimated $20.479 million. The decline in percentage terms was helped by the fact that the film opened on a Wednesday, but it's still an impressive performance. Rise of the Apes help on to second place with $16.3 million in its third weekend, which is perhaps an even better indication of the level of disinterest in the new releases.

Red Returns, But Blank also in the Black
April 12th, 2011
Red State continued its special engagement run earning $82,395 in one theater over the weekend. It has already earned $851,832 and will likely hit a major milestone, or two, before it has its official theatrical release. Blank City opened with $13,989 over the weekend and $21,412 since Wednesday, also in one theater. The Four Times was very, very close behind with $13,678 during its second weekend of release. Independent Spirit Award winner, Meek's Cutoff, was just able to grab a spot in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,021 in two theaters.

Per Theater Chart: Jane Eyre is in the Red
March 15th, 2011
It was an amazing week on the per theater chart, even if you ignore Red State's special showings. The latest Kevin Smith offering added more than $100,000 over the weekend, at two special showings, for an average of $51,283. At this pace, it's going to start hitting major milestones before its theatrical debut this fall. Meanwhile, Jane Eyre had the best per theater average for a regular release this year at $45,721 in four theaters. The good news doesn't end there as Kill The Irishman opened with an average of $29,086 in five theaters, which also suggests the ability to expand significantly. Certified Copy earned close to $80,000 in five theaters for an average of $15,587. That would have been enough to lead the way many weekends so far this year. 3 Backyards opened with $11,000 in one theater, while the overall number one film, Battle: Los Angeles opened with an average of $10,411 in more than 3400 theaters.

Per Theater Chart: Red Hot Start
March 8th, 2011
Red State started its box office run over the weekend, sort of. It played at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City at a special engagement, bringing in $161,590 for one showing. However, with ticket prices at $54, it's hardly a regular showing, so some are saying it shouldn't count. There is an argument to be made that people were paying for the Q&A with Kevin Smith and it is more accurate to consider this part of his popular speaking tour. That said, Dreamgirls also started with a premium showing at higher that usual prices and that counted. Given the number of tickets sold, even if they cost the average amount, it still would have earned $30,000, which would have still led the way on the Per Theater Chart. The only real competition was from Happythankyoumoreplease, which opened with an average of $17,532 in two theaters.

Dear Limited Releases
March 4th, 2011
There are a few releases of note this week, some because of their strong reviews (Uncle Boonmee); some because of the unusual distribution route (Red State); some because of the actor-turned-director (Happythankyoumoreplease). Overall, there should be something for everyone.
