Home Market Releases for April 26th, 2016

April 26th, 2016

Phoenix

We are in Q2, which is historically the slowest time of the year on the home market. The last of the monster Christmas hits were released weeks ago and none of the yearly year hits have come out yet. Ironically, the biggest release of the week is actually a Christmas film, Krampus, and its Blu-ray Combo Pack is a contender for Pick of the Week. (It is admittedly a slow week.) Its two biggest competitors are both foreign-language films: Phoenix: Criterion Collection - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray and Son of Saul - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray. Son of Saul won the Oscar this year for Best Foreign-Language Film, but I'm going with Phoenix instead. More...

Per Theater Chart: Malala and Mars

October 8th, 2015

He Named Me Malala

Only two films were in the $10,000 club this weekend. He Named Me Malala led the way with an average of $15,221 in four theaters, which is very strong for a documentary. The film's reviews are only good, but the appeal here is Malala Yousafzai and I don't think moviegoers are too upset that the film is a little shallow. The Martian was close behind with an average of $14,176. More...

Per Theater Chart: Black Panther Tickled Pink

September 9th, 2015

The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution

There was just one film in the $10,000 club, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, which earned $20,215 in its lone theater over the weekend. This is even more impressive, as it was a Wednesday release and earned $28,580 over five days. While it was the only film to reach $10,000 over the three-day weekend, Un gallo con muchos huevos did earn an average of $11,030 if you include Monday. More...

Per Theater Chart: Grandma Takes Victory Lap

September 2nd, 2015

Grandma

Grandma remained on top of the per theater chart, which is impressive in its own right. While it is not uncommon for a movie to repeat on top of the overall box office, doing so on the per theater chart is a lot rarer. This is because the films most likely to win on the per theater chart are limited releases and if they do well enough to win, they tend to expand the following week. This is what happened with Grandma, which saw its theater count rise from 4 to 19, but its per theater average was still top at $15,330. The only other film in the $10,000 club was War Room, which earned an average of $10,001. That's cutting it really close. More...

Per Theater Chart: Strong Beginning for The End

August 4th, 2015

The End of the Tour

The End of the Tour is the latest success for A24, as it topped the per theater chart with an average of $30,810 in four theaters. Up next were a pair of documentaries, Best of Enemies and Listen to Me Marlon, with averages of $16,913 and $15,034 respectively. The overall number one film was next, as Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation earned an average of $14,034. The final film in the $10,000 club was Phoenix. Its theater count doubled, but its per theater average dropped just 20% to $12,004. That's amazing and it could be an omen that it will expand wide enough to earn some measure of mainstream success. More...

Per Theater Chart: Phoenix Reborn

July 28th, 2015

Phoenix

None of the wide releases earned a spot in the $10,000 club, but at least we had a couple of limited releases that found their way there. The number one film was Phoenix with an average of $15,148 in two theaters. Samba was next with an average of $12,294, also in two theaters. More...

Weekend Estimates: Ant-Man Defeats Poor Pixels

July 26th, 2015

Pixels

Three new wide releases and three returning movies that are still pulling in good crowds will produce a box office chart with no knock-out winner this weekend. That’s in large part thanks to a disappointing debut from Pixels. The Adam Sandler/Kevin James-comedy/adventure-Ghostbusters/wannabe will earn about $24 million this weekend, according to Sony’s Sunday estimate. That puts it in danger of not even earning back its marketing budget domestically, let alone starting to recover the $88 million production budget. It also means that Ant-Man will top the charts for a second weekend. More...
