Synopsis

A hardened CIA operative who has been demoted and finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl, named Sophie where he has been sent undercover begrudgingly to surveil her family. When Sophie discovers hidden cameras in her apartment, she uses her tech savviness to locate where the surveillance operation is set. In exchange for not blowing JJ’s cover Sophie convinces him to spend time with her and teach her to be a spy. Despite his reluctance JJ finds he is no match for Sophie’s disarming charm and wit.

My Spy

Hamilton is coming to Disney+… next week. I’m mentioning it right up front, because it is by far the biggest streaming news of the week, so much so that it could drown out the actual new releases of the week. There are some high-quality releases to check out, including Athlete A, but that might be too bleak to attract an audience. My Spy, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, and Into the Unknown: Making Frozen II are more light-hearted and should do better with viewers. More...

2020 Preview: March

March 1st, 2020

Mulan

The box office had mixed results during February with Birds of Prey missing expectations by a huge margin, but Sonic the Hedgehog did well enough to almost make up the difference. This March, there are three films that will almost certainly reach $100 million domestically: Onward, A Quiet Place: Part II, and Mulan. In fact, all three at least have a slim shot at $200 million domestically. By comparison, last March Captain Marvel was released, which earned more than $400 million, while Us and Dumbo earned close to $300 million combined. I don’t think the top three films this year will match last year’s top three, or even come particularly close, and I fear 2020 will fall behind 2019 in the year-over-year comparison. So much for that lead 2020 built up in January. More...
