Synopsis

The secret life of legendary CIA spymaster William Colby, as told by his son Carl. From his start as an OSS agent parachuting into Nazi-occupied Europe, Colby rose through the ranks of “The Company” as a clandestine officer, overseeing covert operations around the globe. He ran “stay-behind” networks in the Soviet-occupied Baltic States, helped sway elections against the Communists in 1950’s Italy, witnessed the build up and tragic consequences of the assassination of President Diem in 1963, and was the architect of the controversial Phoenix Program during the Vietnam War. But after decades of obediently taking on the White House’s toughest and dirtiest assignments and rising to become Director of CIA, Colby—who always considered himself to be a patriot—defied the President and revealed to Congress the “Family Jewels,” the CIA’s darkest secrets about assassination plots against foreign leaders, mind-control experiments, surveillance against American citizens, and other wrong-doing. A mix of archival footage, never-before-seen photos and interviews with the “who’s who’ of American intelligence, this film is also the personal journey of a son trying to understand a father whose spy identity masked his inner life from his own family.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 17th, 2012

April 17th, 2012

This week's list of DVD and Blu-ray releases is dominated by Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol. The Blu-ray Combo Pack is worth picking up, but you'll want the Best Buy exclusive, or perhaps you want to tell studios to stop doing retailer exclusives, as they are annoying. That added complication is the reason I'm not awarding the release Pick of the Week, but there are not a lot of other films worthy either. Shame has two amazing performances, but the Blu-ray Combo Pack doesn't have a lot of extras. Fans of nature documentaries might want Frozen Planet: The Complete Series on Blu-ray or IMAX: Born to be Wild on 3D Combo Pack. But in the end, I went with the underseen The Last Rites of Joe May on DVD. More...

Per Theater Chart: What a Weekend!

September 27th, 2011

Weekend earned nearly perfect reviews, but I'm still surprised by its box office strength as it earned $27,245 in one theater during its opening weekend of release. The Man Nobody Knew was next with $15,411, also in one theater. Machine Gun Preacher also topped expectations with an average of $11,283 in four theaters, but its reviews suggest it won't last long. Pearl Jam Twenty earned an average of $10,245 in ten theaters over the weekend, and including the special showing it had earlier in the week, it already has close to $400,000. More...
