Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

Blu-ray Sales: John Carter Acts Up

June 20th, 2012

New releases dominated the Blu-ray sales chart just as much as it did the DVD sales chart. Two Blu-rays, John Carter and Act of Valor topped the list. John Carter led the way in terms of units with 965,000 units / $19.30 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just shy of 60%. The film is still going to lose money, but its high definition run should at least cut the loses a bit. More...

DVD Sales: New Releases Get into the Act

June 18th, 2012

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for June 5th, 2012

June 5th, 2012

While summer is usually the slowest time of the year on the home market, this week is fantastic with a lot of prime releases, including first-run, TV on DVD releases, classics and limited releases. Unfortunately, the largest single category is, "Screener is Late". You will see that phrase countless times on this list. (Perhaps it's because last week was a short week due to Memorial Day.) It is especially hard to select a Pick of the Week, because I don't like handing out that title when the screener is late. There are a few likely candidates, including Burn Notice: The Complete Fifth Season, Yellow Submarine on Blu-ray, but I went with Tomboy on DVD. More...

Per Theater Chart: What a Weekend!

September 27th, 2011

Weekend earned nearly perfect reviews, but I'm still surprised by its box office strength as it earned $27,245 in one theater during its opening weekend of release. The Man Nobody Knew was next with $15,411, also in one theater. Machine Gun Preacher also topped expectations with an average of $11,283 in four theaters, but its reviews suggest it won't last long. Pearl Jam Twenty earned an average of $10,245 in ten theaters over the weekend, and including the special showing it had earlier in the week, it already has close to $400,000. More...

Weekend Estimates: Lion King Just Holds Off Moneyball and Dolphin Tale

September 25th, 2011

In a surprisingly strong weekend for September, The Lion King will enjoy a second weekend at the top of the chart, although only by a narrow margin over new entries Moneyball and Dolphin Tale. Disney's animated classic will take in about $22 million this weekend, and now looks set to pass $400 million in lifetime domestic box office before its theatrical run is over, and it has a shot at topping Spider-Man to take a place in the all-time top 10. Thunder Soul and the other Limited Releases Try to Make Some Noise

September 23rd, 2011

It's another week without a lot of limited releases that seem destined for box office success. There are a few films that earned a bit of advanced buzz, but very few of those are earning good reviews. There are two films that are currently earning 100% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes: Thunder Soul and Weekend. But both might have trouble finding an audience either because they are opening in too many theaters, or because the subject matter makes them a niche film. More...

More...

Awards Season: Globes Reward Artistic Intent

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominations and the Awards Season picture started to look a whole lot clearer. The Artist led the way with six nominations, while The Descendents and The Help were right behind with five apiece.

More...
