DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 29th, 2009
December 28th, 2009
The Tuesday after Christmas might seem a strange week to release a DVD or Blu-ray because it's too late to be a Christmas gift.
On the other hand, it's perfect for Boxing Week sales.
Overall we have a very short list this week, but there are still a few releases of note, including 9, which is bit expensive on Blu-ray, but still Pick of the Week material.
Meanwhile, Paranormal Activity is also a Pick of the Week contender, but the screener is late, so I can't say for sure.
I blame the Christmas shipping rush for the delay in getting here.

Featured DVD Review: Jennifer's Body
December 28th, 2009
In 2007 Diablo Cody burst into the movie business as the writer of Juno, which earned top-notch reviews, became the indie darling of the year, and also won more than a few major awards.
Her follow-up script was for a film called Jennifer's Body, a black comedy / horror film, which generated some early buzz because of her name alone.
With Girlfight director Karyn Kusama attached to direct and Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried set to star, there were high hopes for the film despite its very modest $16 million production budget.
However, it was dumped into theaters in the middle of September after earning only mixed reviews and it disappeared quite quickly after that.
Was this a sophomore slump for Cody, or an undeserved outcome?

International Details - Couples Charge Forward
November 14th, 2009
Couples Retreat expanded this past weekend but just missed the top five with $5.84 million on 1,373 screens in 18 markets for a total of $28.92 million after a month of release.
The film opened in third place in Germany under the name All Inclusive, with $2.55 million on 338 screens while it also took third place in Mexico with $446,000 on 235 screens.
Next up for the film is Spain next weekend and Italy the weekend after that, while it doesn't end its run until March when it opens in France.

International Details - Not Taking Any Chances
November 7th, 2009
Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs fell out of the top five but still earned $5.18 million on 2568 screens in 39 markets for a total of $52.45 million so far. This was only 31% lower than last weekend, with no major market openings. In fact, the film doesn't have another major market opening till it debuts in Australia at the end of the month, while it still has openings in Italy and Spain by the end of the year, and it doesn't end its run till early next year with openings in Germany and some midlevel markets.

September Ends on a Cloudy Note
September 28th, 2009
None of the three wide releases were able to live up to Thursday's predictions and while the number one film held on a lot better than expected, it wasn't enough to compensate. Overall the box office was down 4.7% from last weekend to $96%, which was 4.2% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date 2009 is still up on 2008 by 7.8% at $7.8 billion to $7.3 billion.

That's A Spicy Box Office
September 21st, 2009
As expected, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs finished in first place over the weekend, and it beat industry expectations by earning more than $30 million.
This helped the overall box office grow by 9.9% from last weekend.
The total weekend haul of $101 million was also 14.9% higher than the same weekend last year.
Year to date, 2009 has made $7.70 billion at the box office, which is 7.9% higher than last year's pace.
This isn't as large a lead as the box office has had this year, but it's still fantastic.

Meatballs Has More than a Chance
September 18th, 2009
We have four wide releases this week, or at least three wide releases and one semi-wide.
There should be very little suspense on which film will finish first though, as Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is the clear favorite.
The real question is how much it will make and whether or not it can help the overall box office top last year.
Or, if some of the pundits are correct, by how much.

2009 Preview: September
September 1st, 2009
Summer ended on a strong note with three films from August that have the potential to cross $100 million at the box office. But I don't think there's a single film coming out this month that has the potential to do the same.
Then again, we're not concerned with keeping up with August, we are concerned with keeping up with September last year, and that will be an easier task most weeks.
