DVD Releases for November 26, 2008 - Part I

November 25th, 2008

Strange week. There are a dozen spotlight reviews on the list this week, but only one is for a DVD coming out this week. Ten are for DVDs that arrived late, and one spotlight review is actually early. As for this week's releases, there are not that many that seem like must-haves and none rise to the level of a DVD Pick of the Week. If I were to choose the best release found below, it's WALL-E, which came out last week. But even then I would chose the Blu-ray I reviewed last week over the DVD. Despite the lack of a top tier release, there were still more than enough that it was necessary to split the list into two parts. Part two can be found here. More...

Good Night for Violence

March 25th, 2006

A History of Violence took top spot on the rental charts with $8.91 million in combined rentals during its first week of release. In that one week the film earned more than a quarter of what the film took in during its entire theatrically run and should have no trouble surpassing that total before long. More...

Still Lining Up for a Night with Johnny Cash

March 18th, 2006

Despite the release of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Walk the Line remained in first place on the rental charts with $10.03 million over the week and $21.81 million in total. More...

DVD Releases for March 7, 2006

March 6th, 2006

While there are quite a few DVDs coming out tomorrow, only one matters. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 2-Disc Special Edition hits the home market tomorrow and not only should it quickly become the best seller of the year so far, it is the DVD Pick of the Week. More...

Fun Time on the International Charts

February 19th, 2006

Fun with Dick and Jane added an handful of new markets this week and that allowed the film to remain in sixth place with $6.00 million on 2645 screens in 49 markets for a running tally of $63.30 million. The film opened in first place in Spain with $1.54 million on 316 screens and in the Netherlands with $475,000 on 75 screens over the weekend and $520,000 in total. It took first place in Argentina as well with $136,000 on 48. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place during its debut in Denmark with $319,000 on 45 screens over the weekend and $335,000 in total. Holdovers include the U.K. where the film was down 56% to $699,000 over the weekend and $10.44 million in total and Italy with a 55% decline to $594,000 over the weekend and $4.83 million in total. International Details: Jet Li has Nothing to Fear

February 5th, 2006

Jey Li's latest Hong Kong production, Fearless, (a.k.a. Huo Yuan Jia) started its international run in sixth place with $7.35 million on 596 screens in 6 markets. The film finished first in four Asian markets including China with $1.39 million, Taiwan with $630,000, Singapore with $605,000 and Malaysia with $590,000. Paradoxically, the film's best market was its home market of Hong Kong, where it had to settle for a close second place with $2.03 million on just 48 screens over the full week. So far there is still no North American release date, but with this start, that should change soon. More...

Turmoil on International Charts

January 29th, 2006

Late updates have changed some of the results on in International Top Five this week as My Boss, My Student crushed the competition in South Korea with $7.59 million on 450 screens over the weekend and $9.31 million in total. This meant that despite Brokeback Mountain earning a better than initially reported $7.39 million, it was pushed out of the top five and into sixth place. More...

More Milestones for Narnia

January 18th, 2006

Without any big time competition, Narnia was again able to lead the international box office. Over the weekend the film made $22.65 million on 7034 screens in 47 markets breaking the $300 milestone in the international scene with $321.41 million. Also, it became the first film to make $100 million during 2006. Its best numbers of the weekend came from the U.K. where the film added $2.43 million on 467 screens for a 6-week total of $71.42 million. More...

Clown has Kingly Run in South Korea

January 15th, 2006

The King and the Clown did something most films in South Korea can't, it showed strong legs. In fact, in grew by 22% to $5.76 million on 369 screens over the weekend and $16.82 million in total. More...

Little still Large while Get Rich Dies Trying

November 14th, 2005

It was another soft weekend at the box office, with nearly every film in the top five missing expectations. That pushed the overall box office down 7% from last weekend and 14% from the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2005 is now 7% behind last year's pace, while the fall box office season is down 3%. More...

Chicken to Remain Large

November 11th, 2005

Three new wide release hit theatres this weekend, but none seem likely to overtake Chicken Little for top spot on the charts. It also seems likely that the overall box office will continue to fall well behind last year's pace with the combined total of the new releases being less than The Incredibles' sophomore stint. More...

Wide Releases Rule Per Theatre Charts

November 8th, 2005

Jarhead was one of only two films to crack the $10,000 per theatre average mark over the weekend with a chart topping average of $11,500. The only other film to do so was the overall box office champ, Chicken Little, which managed an average of $10,961 in 3,654 theatres. More...

Chicken Not So Little

November 7th, 2005

Both new releases beat expectations, as did every single holdover in the top five, and that led to a serious increase in total box office of 31.5% from last weekend. However, this time last year saw a 43.8% increase, meaning the year-to-year comparison with 2004 was 6.8% down. So far, the Fall season box office has been nearly keeping up with 2004, at $1.118 billion to $1.122 billion, but year-to-date 2005 is 6.4% behind with $7.153 billion. More...

Movie Review: Jarhead

November 6th, 2005

Sam Mendes' war-from-a-soldier's-point-of-view movie hits some high notes, particularly as a technical exercise, but never successfully makes a human connection with its subjects.

Box Office needs a Little Help

November 4th, 2005

There are just the two wide releases this weekend: the prime attraction and the counter programming. While this usually means both films will maximize their box office, this probably won't be the case this weekend. Part of the problem is the box office slump we're in; people are just not interested in going to the movies at the moment. In May, it took a monster hit to start the summer box office session when it normally starts the first week of the month. Likewise, November usually starts off with a bang, but since October was so weak it will probably take until the first monster hit of the month before we see a serious increase in the overall box office. 2005 Preview: November

November 1st, 2005

Wow, that sucked.

October was a terrible month at the box office and all the gains made in September were erased. November promises to be better than October, but the real question is whether it will be better than November of last year. On the plus side, last November was pretty bad, with most films missing expectations. On the down side, there is only one guaranteed hit this month, and only a couple of others that should also perform well with both the critics and the moviegoers. If you have predictions of your own to make, feel free to head over to our forum and share them with our readers.
