DVD Sales - Shopaholic Rings Up the Sales

July 7th, 2009

It was a relatively slow week for new releases, but we still had a new number one DVD on top of the sales chart this week. That DVD was Confessions of a Shopaholic with 554,000 units and $9.51 million in consumer spending at retail. More...

DVD Rentals - Breaking The Code

DVD Releases for June 23rd, 2009

June 23rd, 2009

Seven spotlight reviews on this week's list, but only one for a DVD coming out on Tuesday. (Four are for screeners that arrived late, two are for ones that arrived early, while there are at least three on this week's list that may or may not show up shortly.) The choices for DVD Pick of the Week are not plentiful, with Waltz with Bashir being the only real contender. Despite coming out on both DVD and Blu-ray, the latter is overpriced compared to the former. More...

Taken Takes Top Spot

February 2nd, 2009

Taken took on the competition and won with $24.72 million over the weekend, which was the second best Super Bowl weekend debut behind Miley Cyrus's stunning opening of Best of Both Worlds. This is much better than expected, as the male-oriented rescue / revenge story faced stiff competition from Super Bowl 43, which turned out to be a much better game than anticipated. More...

Will the Box Office Continue to Rise?

January 23rd, 2009

2009 looks to continue its winning streak with two wide releases and a lot of high-powered holdovers. It is unlikely that any of them will live up to last week's number one film, but the overall effort should live up to last year's overall box office and maintain 2009's winning streak. More...

International Details - Bollywood Blockbuster Breaks into Top Five

January 5th, 2009

Ghajini was a surprise entry in the top five as the Indian film earned $12.85 million on 1347 screens in 22 markets, which is more than enough to be considered a monster hit. In fact, it set records in its native market and could break the record set by Dhoom 2 worldwide. More...

2009 Preview: January

January 1st, 2009

Happy New Year! If it's January 1, it must be time to take a look at this month's releases, and analyze how 2009 at the box office will compare to 2008. 2009 is looking to get off to a fast start, but I'm not sure that's going to happen. For one thing, 2008 stumbled down the stretch, which means the box office is relatively soft at the moment. Also, 2008 got off to a great start, which means it will be harder for 2009 to keep pace early on. (On a side note, if the box office is sluggish as expected, it could set the tone for the box office coverage and bad news tends to beget more bad news.) While there are a few films that are aiming for $50 million or more, none have the advance buzz that Cloverfield had, and it is unlikely that any will match its box office. More...

International Details - Bolt Best of the Rest

December 21st, 2008

No new openings left Bolt out of the top five with $4.94 million on 1916 screens in 11 markets for a total of $28.69 million. Its best market was Russia where it slipped to second place with $1.20 million on 570 screens for a three-week total of $10.73 million, while it added $1.06 million on 412 screens over the weekend in Spain for a total of $3.96 million after two. The film has yet to open in most major markets, and won't until the new year, but when it is done it should surpass its domestic total while aiming for $250 million worldwide. More...

DVD Rentals - Still Gran(d)

July 15th, 2009

Gran Torino returned to the top of the rental chart with more than 50% more rentals than the second place release, 12 Rounds, which opened a tiny, tiny fraction ahead of Confessions of a Shopaholic. More...

July 7th, 2009

There was a surprise on top of the rental chart as two new releases battled it out for first place. Surprisingly, The Code won the fight with roughly 16% more rentals than second place Confessions of a Shopaholic opened with. More...

More...

International Details - Bride Wars as Bridesmaid

February 15th, 2009

Bride Wars continues its bridesmaid run just missing the top five this week after just missing the top ten last week. It did ad $5.88 million on 2485 screens in 30 markets for a total of $32.11 million after a month of release. Openings this week include Germany, where the film placed second with $1.62 million on 455 screens, which is a mixed debut. More...

International Details - Slumdog Continues to Earn Millions

February 8th, 2009

Slumdog Millionaire slipped to sixth place with $7.67 million on 1275 screens in 12 markets for a total of $42.46 million. The film had no major openings this past weekend, but it added $3.02 million on 416 screens during its fourth weekend on top of the charts in the U.K. for a total of $18.21 million in that one market.

More...

Contest - Pen is Mightier than the Villain

January 16th, 2009

Could Inkheart become Brendan Fraser's third $100 million movie is roughly six months? Unlikely, but it is the target film in our latest box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Inkheart. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win Supercop on DVD, as well as Pucca - Kung Fu Kisses. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win the second Pucca DVD, Ninjas Love Noodles. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...
