International Details - The One tops $10 Million
December 28, 2008
It turns out studio estimates were highly accurate, and the only real change from Wednesday's column involves a surprise $10 million film. If You Are The One opened in first place in China and fourth place internationally with $11.68 million on 1010 screens.
- Four Christmas opened in a few major markets this past weekend, but bombed in all but one of them. That one market was Russia, where it placed second with $1.55 million on 320 screens. On the other hand, it made just $370,000 on 287 screens in Mexico earning fifth place there, while it could do no better than eighth in Spain with $388,000 on 258 screens. Its biggest market over the weekend, and overall, was the U.K. where it added $1.58 million on 401 screens giving a total of $12.60 million after four.
- Bolt remained in sixth place with $6.20 million on 2354 screens in 14 markets for a total of $46.16 million. This includes a first place, $1.57 million opening on 500 screens in Mexico. Next up for the film is China this weekend, while it debuts in South Korea and Australia next weekend. Meanwhile, it doesn't end its run till August of next year when it opens in Japan.
- Natale A Rio opened in second place in Italy with $4.67 million on 592 screens, while it pulled in $65,000 on 13 screens in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland.
- Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi held on better than most Indian films down just shy of 50% to $4.31 million on 937 screens in 19 markets over the weekend for a total of $16.97 million after two.
- Yes Man started its international run off in ninth place with $4.03 million on 1000 screens in six markets over the weekend for a total of $4.39 million. It opened in fourth place in Spain with $1.17 million on 298 screens, while it earned fifth place in South Korea with $1.04 million on 314 screens over the weekend and $1.34 million in total.
- Largo Winch opened in tenth place with $3.92 million on 518 screens in 3 markets over the weekend. All but a rounding error of that coming from its second place opening in France.
- Ip Man expanded, but it just missed the top ten with $3.90 million on 1081 screens in 5 markets and now has $7.76 million in total.
- Il Cosmo Sul Como opened in 12th place with $3.76 million on 486 screens in 2 markets over the weekend. This includes a third place, $3.34 million opening on 479 screens in Italy, while it made the rest in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland.
- 1 1/2 Knights - In Search of the Ravishing Princess Herzelinde opened in second place in Germany with $3.23 million on 608 screens, while it made $3.67 million on 714 screens in 3 markets overall.
- Quantum of Solace fell from 5th to 14th place with $3.05 million on 2658 screens in 58 markets. However, it is shedding theaters and markets, so this decline is to be expected, and with $372.83 million internationally and $534.03 million worldwide, it is a huge hit. Add in Japan, and it could become the biggest hit of the Bond franchise.
- Burn After Reading fell to 15th place with $3.04 million on 933 screens in 24 markets for a total of $84.31 million. The film remained in third place in France with $2.66 million on 475 screens, but that was for the full week, and now it has $6.35 million after two.
- WALL-E added $2.94 million on 661 screens in 9 markets to its total of $282.63 million internationally and $506.41 million worldwide. This includes a second place performance in Japan with $2.87 million on 454 screens over the weekend, for a total of $17.89 million after three.
- Body Of Lies remained in 17th place with $2.82 million on 1558 screens in 46 markets for a total of $65.21 million. This includes a fourth place, $1.20 million opening on 313 screens in Japan, however, that gives it a per screen average well below $5000, which suggests a quick exit from that market. And with no additional significant markets left to open in, that will result in a quick exit from the international charts.
- Overspeed Scandal held on a lot better than expected in South Korea down just 8% to $2.79 million on 394 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.80 million after three. Two weeks of strong legs in a market known for pump and dumps is impressive.
- Transporter 3 added $2.61 million on 1241 screens in 13 markets for a total of $28.13 million. The film has yet to open in a number of major markets, and it has already nearly made as much as it did domestically. Add in a reasonable production budget, and a high potential on the home market, and this movie should have no problem showing a profit.
- Australia opened worldwide on the 24th through the 26th, which means we won't have that data till Wednesday (unless it is delayed by the holidays). Its last pre-expansion weekend saw it add $2.54 million on 1053 screens in 7 markets for a total of $19.20 million.
- Inkheart slipped out of the top 20 with $2.49 million on 984 screens in 4 markets for a total of $7.07 million. It held on extremely well in Germany down just 13% to $1.73 million on 498 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.26 million after two. Likewise, it showed legs in U.K. with $814,000 on 415 screens over the weekend and $2.41 million after two.
- K-20: Legend Of The Mask opened in third place in Japan and 22nd internationally with $1.89 million on 322 screens in Japan.
- Journey To The Centre of the Earth returned to the charts in 23rd place with $1.79 million on 449 screens in 11 markets for a total of $120.09 million. It returned to the charts thanks to a second place, $1.78 million opening on 438 screens over the weekend in South Korea, while it now has $2.17 million in that market.
- Max Manus opened in first place in Norway and in 24th place internationally with $1.70 million on 103 screens.
- Ponyo on the Cliff By The Sea returned to the chart in 25th place with $1.67 million on 418 screens in 2 markets over the weekend for a total of $165.22 million. This week it opened in South Korea securing $2,06 million on 404 screens, but that includes midweek numbers.
- Forever Enthralled nearly slid out of the top 30, as the Chinese film fell 59% to $1.63 million on 882 screens in 2 markets for a total of $14.76 million.
- High School Musical 3: Senior Year earned $1.62 million on 1574 screens in 29 markets for a total of $148.19 million. When it opens in Japan, it should be able to push the film's worldwide total to $250 million, which is an amazing figure, especially compared to its production budget of $33 million.
- The Tale of Despereaux started its international run with just $1.59 million on 786 screens in 2 markets, of which $830,000 was earned on 406 screens in the U.K. while $760,000 was earned on 380 screens in Spain.
- Rudo y Cursi opened with $1.46 million on 402 screens over the weekend, which was enough for second place in Mexico and 29th place internationally.
- Rounding out the international top 30 was Niko & The Way To The Stars, which earned $1.46 million on 659 screens in 9 markets over the weekend for a total of $4.03 million. The film opened in fifth place in France with $1.69 million on 373 screens, but that was for the full week.
