Weekend predictions: Thor shooting for second-best weekend of 2022
July 8th, 2022
Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World: Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and now Thor: Love and Thunder. The first three films to open over $100 million since Memorial Day weekend are about to be joined by a fourth, and all of them share a common characteristic: a colon in their title. Coincidence? Yes.
And also, no.

Weekend predictions: Dominion headed for monster weekend
June 10th, 2022
Jurassic World: Dominion posted $18 million from previews and is headed for one of the largest openings of the year. But, even though this is well-established franchise, and one of the most consistent earners in the industry, our models say that there’s still quite a bit of uncertainty over where it will end up by Monday morning.

Weekend predictions: $50 million the goal for Maverick
June 3rd, 2022
With no new films playing in over 1,000 theaters this weekend, Top Gun: Maverick doesn’t face much competition in its second weekend. It could still fall dramatically though, given it posted big numbers from previews (which are included in its opening-weekend $126 million total), and it was a perfect fit for Memorial Day weekend. Some repeat business from ultra fans could stem the losses, but our model thinks anything over $50 million would be a good total this time around.

Weekend predictions: Downton headed for the mid to high teens
May 20th, 2022
The long wait is finally over for followers of the Grantham family, as Downton Abbey: A New Era arrives in movie theaters in North America this weekend. The film was originally scheduled for global release in December of last year before moving to its current berth, and that should have helped its box office prospects, even if it was never expected to match the $31-million debut of the first movie in the franchise. Based on the current market conditions, and its performance from Thursday-evening previews, a weekend in the mid to high teens looks likely.

Weekend predictions: Doctor Strange set for easy second-week win, $62.6 million the target
May 13th, 2022
There’s really no competition at the box office this weekend for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will cruise to a comfortable win in its second outing. Our model is predicting a steep decline from its $187-million debut, with a fall in ticket sales of around two thirds, and a $62.6-million weekend on the cards. The two new wide releases won’t come anywhere close to that, although they both come from production houses with excellent records in their particular niches.

Weekend predictions: Doctor Strange looking at $200-million debut
May 6th, 2022
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will herald an important return to form for the Marvel Cinematic Universe this weekend, with its $36 million from previews on Thursday (the 8th-best preview number ever) pointing towards a weekend somewhere around $200 million. Whether it tops that figure will depend on its legs through the weekend. Historically MCU movies have had good legs, with opening weekends up to eight times their earnings from previews (which would translate into an eye-watering $288 million weekend—probably an unrealistic goal). The number to look out for is a multiplier of 5.6, which would take Multiverse of Madness past Black Panther’s $202 million and mark the best MCU outing for a non-Avengers, non-Spider-Man film.
