Limited and VOD Releases: Feeling Maudlin
June 16th, 2017
It is not a particularly good week when it comes to limited releases and almost none of the films on this week’s list have a shot at box office success. The Book of Henry is the widest release by far, but its reviews will likely result in a really poor theater average. On the other hand, Maudie might be able to earn some measure of mainstream success. Its reviews are certainly a positive sign.

Featured DVD Review: The Devil's Hand
December 14th, 2014
The Devil's Hand was filmed early in 2012, but its release was pushed back until it finally came out in October in limited release, as well as on Video on Demand. It opened well below the Mendoza Line and I very much doubt most people reading this even remember it came out. That's how quiet its buzz was. That said, does it deserve better? Or is there a good reason the film's release was delayed?

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Alan Partridge
October 26th, 2014
In Alan Partridge, Steve Coogan plays Alan Partridge, a character he first played more than 20 years ago. However, for most people here, this will be their first introduction to the character. Will this be a problem? Are there too many inside jokes? Or will the humor be appreciated by even those who have never heard of Alan Partridge before?

Featured TV on DVD Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Six
June 21st, 2014
This is the penultimate season for Star Trek: The Next Generation and the end of what most people would call the golden age of the seasons. (Season seven wasn't bad. It was better than the first two seasons, but it was certainly not as good as seasons three through six.) So what are the highlights of season six? Are there many lowlights? And is the Blu-ray worth upgrading to?

Limited Releases: Afflicting Limited Releases on the Public
April 4th, 2014
It is a busy week, not only in terms of quantity, but also quality. There are seven films earning 80% positive reviews or higher (at least when I checked last). Some of these, like Afflicted, probably won't find an audience in theaters, because it is just the wrong genre. Others, like The Unknown Known and Watermark, might do well for the genre, but won't find any real measure of mainstream success. On the other hand, Under the Skin and Alan Partridge might find audiences in theaters.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Four
July 24th, 2013
Star Trek: The Next Generation is one of the most successful syndicated shows of all time. It ran for seven seasons and was seen by millions every week. I've had a chance to review all three previous seasons. Season one was mostly mediocre, while season two had better highs, but worse lows. It was season three where the show reached its full potential. Is season four just as good? Is it even better? Or does it slip a little in quality?

Featured TV on DVD Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Three
April 22nd, 2013
Star Trek: The Next Generation ran for seven seasons and while the first two seasons were mixed, season three is widely regarded at the beginning of the classic period. Is this true? Or is it only good when compared to the first two seasons?

Featured TV on DVD Review: Father Dowling Mysteries: Season Three
March 11th, 2013
Father Dowling Mysteries ends its home market run this week. It only ran three seasons during its original run, and only one of them, season three, was a full season. It was also the last season. I previously reviewed the first two seasons and thought it was good, but not great. Did it get canceled just as it was reaching its peak? Or did it fade away?

Featured TV on DVD Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Two
December 1st, 2012
Star Trek: The Next Generation lasted for seven seasons and for much of its run, it was considered the best Sci-fi series of its day. However, season one wasn't among its best seasons. In fact, it wasn't until the fifth / sixth episode, Where No One Has Gone Before, till we got a good episode and there are only about six others that are good. Granted, a lot of shows take a little while to find their footing. So does the show begin to shine in Season Two? Or does it take a step back? What about extras and the technical presentation? Do they warrant the high price?
