2014 Preview: August
August 1st, 2014
July was... well... let's just pretend it didn't happen. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes did well, but week after week 2014 fell further behind 2013 in the year-to-date comparison. At the moment, we are roughly $400 million behind last year's pace and while I don't think August will continue the losing streak, there's really no chance August will put a dent in that number. It looks more and more likely that Guardians of the Galaxy will be a hit, especially given its early reviews, but it could be the last $100 million hit till October, if the bad buzz surrounding Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles turns into bad ticket sales. Last August there were two films that reached $100 million, plus two others that came close. This August might match that, while the biggest film this year should top the biggest film from last year. I think the slump 2014 is suffering through will end the first weekend and overall I think it will cut the deficit a little bit. That said, summer 2014 will still end as one of the worst recent summers at the box office.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 1st, 2014
March 31st, 2014
The home market isn't terrible this week and there are a couple of releases on top that could sell well. However, it is not a very deep week and even the second page of the new releases over on Amazon.com has some releases I would call filler. Anchorman: The Legend Continues on 3-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack is the best-selling new release of the week and it is arguably the best as well. The Pirate Fairy on Blu-ray Combo Pack is the second best-selling new release of the week and also a contender for Pick of the Week. Meanwhile, I'm really looking forward to seeing Knights of Badassdom but the Blu-ray Combo Pack is still on its way.

Limited Releases: Best Week Ever?
January 31st, 2014
It's a rather busy week for limited releases, but not a good week. There are a couple of films that are earning overwhelmingly good reviews, 12 O'Clock Boys and Tim's Vermeer, but there are more films earning terrible reviews. The limited release I'm most interested in are the 2014 Oscar Shorts. This year they are split into four films (live action, animated, and two for the documentaries) and should easily be the biggest limited release of the weekend. The total combined reviews are 30 positive and only 4 negative.

Limited Releases: Are Limited Releases Up to the Challenge?
January 4th, 2013
Because you need to release a film before January 1st to quality for Oscars, many studios release their best limited releases right before the year ends. This means January is the worst time of year to release a limited release. Not only is it too late for Oscar glory, but they have to compete with films going for Oscar glory. So it comes as no surprise there are not a lot of films on this week's list, and only one of them, 56 Up, is earning great reviews.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Dora the Explorer: Dora's Royal Rescue
September 30th, 2012
Dora The Explorer is one of the most prolific shows for preschoolers with countless DVDs coming out. The latest one is Dora's Royal Rescue, which only has two episodes, but one of them is a double-length adventure. Is that enough to make the DVD worth picking up?
