Theater counts: Garfield claws its way to widest release on a slow weekend
May 30th, 2024
The Memorial Day weekend box office turned out to be a disappointment in what should have been a healthy four-day stretch to kick off the Summer movie season. Topping the domestic charts were two of the three newcomers, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga narrowly edging out The Garfield Movie, with $32.34 million to $31.26 million from Friday through Monday. This weekend will undoubtedly see the two reigning leaders remain on top, although there’s a good chance the roles will be reversed.

New on DVD and Blu-ray: Never Rarely… and Mob Psycho Lead the New Releases
June 9th, 2020
It is a slower week on the home market with no really big releases to talk about, at least not when you judge them by box office numbers. The Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection Blu-ray is massive, when you judge it by the price and the running time, but it is filled with low-budget B-movies. The biggest box office hit is The Hunt, which couldn’t ride its controversial nature to high ticket sales. As for the best releases, it was close race between Never Rarely Sometimes Always on DVD and season two Mob Psycho 100 on Blu-ray Combo Pack. Both have stellar reviews and it was a coin toss to decide which one would come out ahead, which Mob Psycho 100 won.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Star Trek: Discovery: Season One
November 27th, 2018
Star Trek: Discovery is the first TV series in the Star Trek franchise since the untimely, and well-deserved, early death of Enterprise. It was part of the launch of CBS’s streaming service and it helped increase subscriptions to that service, so in that regard, it was a success. Is it also a critical success? Or did it thrive during its first season more out of curiosity than anything else?

2018 Preview: August
August 1st, 2018
Overall, July was a a little weaker than expected. Ant-Man and the Wasp appears to be on pace for $200 million, while it is too soon to tell if Mission: Impossible—Fallout will also get there. That said, 2018 is still ahead of 2017 by $550 million, so the month of July was a success in that regard. As for August, there’s only one movie that is expected to earn $100 million, Christopher Robin, and maybe a few others that could hit $50 million. It’s a rather sad slate of movies. Fortunately, last August was even worse, so 2018 should at least maintain its lead. Maybe we can get lucky and come away with a $600 million lead by the end of the month.

Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Smurfs: The Lost Village
July 9th, 2017
Smurfs: The Lost Village is the third theatrical release in the franchise, but it is a reboot dropping the live action elements the first two films had. Unfortunately, it had the worst box office performance in the franchise and even though it did better internationally, there likely won’t be another film in the franchise for quite a while. Is this unfortunate news? Did the franchise finally find its footing? Or was it clear it was never going to get better?
