Theater counts: Spider-Man has no equal heading into the New Year
December 30th, 2021
Once again the New Year is right around the corner and per usual, it will be a slow weekend as far as new releases are concerned. That said, most films would be hard-pressed to compete with the phenom that is Spider-Man: No Way Home. The latest film featuring the webbed superhero has stunned the movie world by racking up huge numbers at the box office since its release nearly two weeks ago. The film has to date collected well over $1 billion worldwide, including nearly $537 million domestically and now sits at number 12 in all-time domestic earnings; again after only 13 days.

2020 Preview: March
March 1st, 2020
The box office had mixed results during February with Birds of Prey missing expectations by a huge margin, but Sonic the Hedgehog did well enough to almost make up the difference. This March, there are three films that will almost certainly reach $100 million domestically: Onward, A Quiet Place: Part II, and Mulan. In fact, all three at least have a slim shot at $200 million domestically. By comparison, last March Captain Marvel was released, which earned more than $400 million, while Us and Dumbo earned close to $300 million combined. I don’t think the top three films this year will match last year’s top three, or even come particularly close, and I fear 2020 will fall behind 2019 in the year-over-year comparison. So much for that lead 2020 built up in January.

Featured DVD Review: L.O.R.D: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties
September 26th, 2017
I try to average one review a week and this week I had two potential screeners I could request. L.O.R.D: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties, a computer animated Chinese film that most of our readers have probably never heard of, and Transformers: The Last Knight, the latest installment in one of the biggest franchises around. I choose L.O.R.D: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties, because even after reading a plot summary, and being utterly confused, I still felt it was the better choice for review. Confusing can still be entertaining, while The Last Knight would just make me angry. Did I make the right choice?

Limited and VOD Releases: Limited Releases Need Some Animal Magnetism
November 18th, 2016
There are few films on this week’s list, but most of them are earning good reviews. Two of them, Manchester by the Sea and Nocturnal Animals, are also earning Oscar buzz and I wouldn’t be surprised of both did very well on the per theater average chart. On the other hand, I’m interested in seeing Girls und Panzer The FILM.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: X-Men: Days of Future Past: The Rogue Cut
July 27th, 2015
X-Men: Days of Future Past came out last year and earned plenty of praise from critics. It also became the biggest worldwide hit in the franchise. Now it is being re-released on DVD or Blu-ray as something called The Rogue Cut. How is it different from the theatrical release? And is it worth the double-dip?
