Theater counts: Black Adam easily repeats while Prey for the Devil arrives for Halloween
October 27th, 2022
To no great surprise, Black Adam will once again be the week’s widest release in North America as the superhero feature will retain all of the 4,402 theaters from its debut weekend in its second outing. The Dwayne Johnson movie snagged a very respectable $67 million over its first three days and has settled in with just over $80 million in domestic earnings and a global take of nearly $156 million so far. This week sees two new films opening in wide release: the pre-Halloween horror flick Prey for the Devil and Call Jane.

2020 Preview: January
January 1st, 2020
It’s the year 2020, the year where we find out how many times you can say, “Well, hindsight is 20/20.” before you get punched. On the positive side, while December wasn’t a great month, it was good enough to help 2019 end on a positive note, a positive note that should continue into January. There are no real potential monster hits coming out this month, but there are three films that have a real shot at $100 million domestically. These are, in alphabetical order, 1917, which will rely on Awards Season to get to the century mark. Bad Boys for Life will have a much, much easier time getting to $100 million, assuming people still care about the franchise 17 years later. Finally, Dolittle is looking like a disaster with a really troubled production; however, a $100 million run isn’t out of the question and if it can get there, it will at least save face. As for last January, Glass was the biggest hit of the month in terms of raw dollars, but The Upside was more impressive, as it is one the biggest hits in STX Entertainment’s history. We need two of the three potential $100 million hits to reach that mark to keep pace with last year, but we also have one more weekend to get there.

Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Molly’s Game
April 9th, 2018
Jessica Chastain started her acting career in Jolene, a movie that is not good. She was the best part of the movie and it was clear she had movie star potential. The next year she got an Oscar nomination for The Help and the year after that she got her second Oscar nod for Zero Dark Thirty. Nearly every year since, she’s made at least one film that has earned some Award season buzz, but hasn’t been able to climb back to Oscar contender. Molly’s Game was the latest to get some Awards Season buzz for the actress and she even got a Golden Globe Nomination, but no Oscar recognition. Is the movie good, but not Awards Season good? Or did it deserve better?
