Dog Man

Last weekend belonged to newcomer Flight Risk at the domestic box office as the Mel Gibson-directed thriller toppled Mufasa: The Lion King from the lead position by scoring $11.58 million over the three-day period, to the latter’s $8.59 million. This weekend looks to once again belong to the newcomers, led by the animated film Dog Man.

Part dog. Part man. All hero. Dog Man is sworn to protect and serve as he doggedly pursues the feline supervillain Petey the Cat. Beginning its run in 3,885 locations, the film features the voices of Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Ricky Gervais, and a host of other well-known Hollywood veterans. The film is based on the Scholastic graphic novels of the same name by Dav Pilkey, which have sold in excess of $20 million since their first publication in 2016.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is the Drew Hancock sci-fi thriller, Companion, set to release in 3,285 theaters. The film revolves around the capabilities (and dangers) of artificial intelligence. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid star.

Making its way into 1,275 movie houses is the latest from Briarcliff Entertainment with the release of Valiant One, a film about a courageous soldier in charge of leading a group of fellow soldiers out of hostile North Korea.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the previous widest release as Mufasa: The Lion King falls to third place this weekend but is still widely available in 3,180 locations. Occupying the fourth slot is last weekend’s newcomer and current box office leader with Flight Risk retaining its opening count of 3,161 venues. Lastly, the $227 million domestic earner, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, comes in this weekend with 2,665 locations.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see the debut of a duo of wide releases including the New Zealand horror-comedy Heart Eyes, as well as the as action comedy, Love Hurts, starring Ke Huy Quan. Those films are set to arrive in approximately 2,800 and 3,200 theaters respectively.
