Weekend projections: The Beekeeper snatches a weekend win

January 28, 2024

The Beekeeper

A strong hold in its third weekend will allow The Beekeeper to put an end to Mean Girls’ party at the top of the box office chart. The Jason Statham action movie will decline only 14% from last weekend, with MGM projecting a $7.4-million weekend—just enough to eclipse Mean Girls’ expected $7.3 million.

Here’s how the domestic numbers look as of Sunday morning (click on the image for the full chart of films reporting so far)…

There’s a small chance that a strong Sunday from Mean Girls could still let it cling on to number one, but that’s looking like a long shot. Both films are clearly being helped by a lack of competition, but the hold for The Beekeeper is still excellent for an action movie in its third weekend. With $42.3 million in the bank domestically and $44.2 million at the international box office, the film has $86.5 million worldwide and is well on the way to profitability. A sequel hasn’t been announced, but seems inevitable at this point.

Mean Girls’ hold isn’t poor by any means, and is just 5% below our model’s prediction, but it isn’t having the kind of run often enjoyed by musicals. Notably, it’s having the worst hold of any film in the top 10.

Among the Oscar nominees, American Fiction is arguably having the best weekend, adding 65% to last weekend’s numbers while roughly doubling its theater count. Poor Things will be the highest-earning Best-Picture nominee this weekend thanks to an increase of 43% from last weekend.

The other notable number in the top ten is for Godzilla Minus One, which jumps 276% to $2.6 million thanks to a black and white re-release as Godzilla Minus One Minus Color. It has $55 million to date in North America.

Migration, meanwhile, will pass $100 million at the domestic box office this weekend, and, very neatly, surpass $100 million internationally too. Its end-of-weekend total will be around $206 million worldwide.

Aside from the Oscar hopefuls, Migration will have the best hold in the top ten, down just 6% from last time, but the general lack of competition is evident in the holds for all returning films. Wonka will decline just 12% and Anyone But You 11%, for example. The release of Argylle next weekend will finally put those films to the test, although ironically it’ll be this weekend’s box office champion, The Beekeeper, that will have the strongest competition.
